Gold Prize Honey Enjoys Strong Tailwind For Top Thursday Training Race Time At Remington Park

by Richard Linihan

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – FEBRUARY 18, 2026–After the stiff headwind that started the Thursday of 13 training races at Remington Park, switched to a strong tailwind just past the halfway point, it was just natural that one of the horses in the latter races was the fastest of the day.

That’s exactly what happened as Gold Prize Honey in the ninth race stopped the clock in :13.352 for 250 yards over a fast track. That was the quickest of all 13 races, run with a tailwind of 21 mph. The 2-year-old Texas-bred American Quarter Horse filly earned a speed index of 86. She was the only runner who broke 80 on the chart on Thursday.

Gold Prize Honey looked more like her father than her mother did on this day. She is sired by Gold Heart Eagle V, who finished his short racing career with a win in the 2020 Grade 1 All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs, N.M., to bump his earnings to $530,883. He banked that in only seven career starts. His last four speed indexes went from 92 to 101 to 107 to 108 in the Derby and then he was retired to stallion duty.

Gold Prize Honey’s dam (mother), the Mr Jess Perry mare First Prize Honey was something of a bust on the track with only one win in three starts, a maiden win at Lone Star Park.

Thursday’s fastest training race winner, Gold Prize Honey, is trained by Jesus Ruiz for owner Troy McClennen of Raceland, Louisiana. The filly was bred by Simmons Racing in Texas.

During the early training races Thursday, the horses raced into a stiff southerly headwind that reached 22 mph with the temperature at 64 degrees at 11am. By the end of the day, and the 13th race around 4:15pm, the temperature had dropped to 56 degrees and they were running with a 22 mph tailwind out of the northwest.

Rite or Wrong won the opener on the card, the only race of the day designated for 3,4,and 5-year-old Quarter Horses, and it was a fast time into a stiff headwind of 21 mph (:13.578 for a 77-speed index). Rite or Wrong, a 3-year-old California-bred filly by Favorite Cartel, out of the Stel Corona mare Quirky, is trained by Fernando Manriquez and is owned by Laura A. Erickson and Jill Cook. She was bred by Steve D. Burns, DVM.

The rest of the races Thursday were for 2-year-old horses, two of them (races 2 and 3) were restricted to Paints and Appaloosas.
