Bogarts Brown Sugar turned in the fastest qualifying time Saturday afternoon at Zia Park, defeating Suspicious Rizzler by a neck in a tightly contested trial to headline the 10 finalists for the $170,000-added New Mexico Classic Futurity (RG2).

Five trials at 350 yards were contested for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds over a muddy racing surface, with the 10 fastest qualifiers advancing to the November 22 final.

Bogarts Brown Sugar, a sorrel gelding by Bogart, stopped the clock in :17.406 in the third trial (Race 4) to secure the top qualifying position. Despite breaking a step slowly, the heavily favored gelding rallied late under jockey Luis Martinez to catch Suspicious Rizzler in the final strides.

Suspicious Rizzler secured the second-fastest qualifying time of :17.448 after finishing a game second to Bogarts Brown Sugar in the same trial.

The 2-year-old gelding by Suspicious Interest, out of Lip Smacker by Pyc Paint Your Wagon, broke sharply and battled throughout before being caught near the wire.

Ridden by Jacob Enriquez for trainer Renee K. Wilson, Suspicious Rizzler races for owner Katie Gleason-Larson. He was bred in New Mexico by La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC.

Suspicious Rizzler was an $8,000 purchase at the 2025 Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale.

Still seeking his first career victory, the gelding has recorded two seconds and one third from five starts, earning $15,116. He was previously a finalist in the New Mexico Breeders' Futurity (RG2).

Perrys Alibi posted the third-fastest qualifying time of :17.497 with a three-quarter-length victory in the second trial (Race 3).

The gray gelding by Bp Cartels Alibi broke alertly from post seven, established an early advantage and maintained control through the 350-yard contest under jockey Christian Ramos. Jess Good Times finished second in :17.612.

Owned by Jose Moreno and trained by David M. Gomez-Barraza, Perrys Alibi was bred in New Mexico by Carlos Carrasco. He is out of Perrys Pleasure, a daughter of Mr Jess Perry.
