FARMINGTON, NM–FEBRUARY 10, 2026– The New Mexico Racing Commission (NMRC) unanimously approved Western Gaming’s request to relocate SunRay Park from Farmington to Clovis, New Mexico, a move of approximately 400 miles. The vote followed an hour-long executive session during a meeting in Albuquerque.
After 27 years in Farmington, SunRay Park’s lease will expire in 2028. Live racing will continue as scheduled during the current year.
SunRay Park president Paul Blanchard cited a 60% decline in revenue attributed to market saturation in the Farmington area. From 2011 to 2024, the track’s annual revenue declined from $10 million to $4 million. The relocation is projected to generate approximately $50 million annually in state tax revenue.
Senior legal staffer David Dominguez said a recent request by Zia Park in Hobbs to develop a racino in Clovis demonstrates the strength of the Clovis market and supports the conclusion that relocation would benefit the state’s horse racing industry. Dominguez also noted that Zia Park, along with the City of Farmington and San Juan County, had formally objected to the relocation and sought legal intervention, which was rejected by the Racing Commission.
Dominguez said the process, which began in October, was deliberative. Commissioners also acknowledged receiving hundreds of letters, emails, and phone calls both supporting and opposing the move.
While casino operations could begin earlier, live horse racing in Clovis is expected to begin by 2028.
