Q-RACING JOURNAL—AUGUST 30, 2016—Toby Keeton had a good afternoon on the first day of trials to the All American Futurity (G1).
On Friday, August 19, the trainer from Seguin, Texas, sent out Koolnfamous and Volcoms Lady to qualify to the $3 million final on Labor Day at Ruidoso Downs.
Koolnfamous and Volcoms Lady both came into the trials as maidens, Koolnfamous from three starts and Volcoms Lady from two. Koolnfamous won his All American trial impressively by 1 1/2 lengths in :21.648, posting the fourth-fastest qualifying time on the first day. Volcoms Lady dashed to the day’s fifth-qualifying time while winning the 14th of 15 trials and notching a neck victory in :21.705.
“Koolnfamous is a big sonovabuck,” Keeton said. “He’s been a little slow coming around this year, but he’s sound and he’s a really good colt. He’s quiet, he tries, he doesn’t do anything stupid. He showed a lot of talent early on, but the owners wanted to save him for the All American so I stopped on him, and it took awhile to get him rolling again. He’s doing great now. I look for him to run a really big race.”
And then there’s Volcoms Lady.
