Jess Good Wine Sets New Stakes Record Time In Winning $68,000 Mr Jet Moore Stakes [RG2]

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK–APRIL 6, 2024–The last race of the evening at Remington Park, the $68,000 Mr Jet Moore Stakes [RG2], was a field full of $100,000 plus money earners. It came down to a three way photo finish at the wire between Jess Good Wine, Hooked N Gone and Apollitical Payoff. It was the post-time favorite Jess Good Wine who made his way to the winner's circle.

The race was run over a surface labeled good after a couple doses of heavy rain hit Remington Park prior to the first race of the night. Previously, Slew of Success held the fastest Mr Jet Moore Stakes winning time of :17.316 in 2014. In fact, the top three finishers in Saturday night’s race all had faster times than Slew of Success.

Jess Good Wine, ridden by Bryan Candanosa, now holds the new stakes record of :17.273 seconds after clocking a 102 speed index with a 10 mph cross wind. The victory paid $2.60 to win on 3/1 odds.

"He is an amazing horse to ride," said Candanosa. "We got bumped a little at the beginning and after that he did it pretty much on his own. I just tried to stay out of his way. I had a lot of horse still left in the tank. It was pretty deep down on the inside (of the track)."

The 300-yard stakes victory was trainer Toby Keeton's second win of the evening and he conditions Jess Good Wine for owner Guns Up Racing. The $39,600 paycheck increased his bank account to $366,083.

The managing partner of Guns Up Racing, Kevin Hogan, was beside himself over the victory. "This horse had surgery as a 2-year-old and has been a monster ever since," he said.

Keeton said Jess Good Wine would likely be pointed to the Dee Raper Sooner State Stakes on Saturday, April 27 for Oklahoma-breds racing 400 yards, and possibly on closing night, Saturday, June 1, in the Grade 1 Debbie Schauf Remington Park Invitational Championship.

Jess Good Wine has lit the board 13 of 15 starts with seven career wins. He has won his last five out of seven starts, including the Hobbs America Derby Invitational Stakes [G3], All American Invitational Stakes and Rainbow Invitational Stakes. The four-year-old gelding by Good Reason SA placed second in the Texas Classic Derby [G1], Sam Houston Derby [G3] and Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge [G3].

Flag Ranch LLC bred Jess Good Wine in Oklahoma out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Mr Perrys Wine, who is a full sister to three-time graded stakes winner Time For Wine. The $35,000 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale graduate is from the female family of champions Alice K White and Astica.

Runner-up Hooked N Gone, ridden by Justine Klaiber, held the lead out of the gates but was outnodded at the wire by a head for second best by a nose over Apollitical Payoff. The son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon has lit the board 14 of 19 starts with five wins and $514,243 in the bank.

Trainer Eddie D. Willis saddled the multiple graded stakes winner for owner/breeder Regina Laymon. The Oklahoma-bred four-year-old gelding is out of Pretty Girl Kate by Pretty Boy Perry.

Apollitical Payoff, under the guidance of Edwin Escobedo, had a late gain for third. The five-year-old Jason Olmstead trained gelding has seven career wins with $283,498 in earnings, including three stakes victories.

Brenda Reiswig bred and owns Apollitcal Payoff in Oklahoma. He is out of the Tres Seis mare Seis The Royal Cash.

The remaining order of finish is Ls Jacks Back, Deutsch, Rgs Gold Wagon and One Fabulous Boy.

The victory was the first for all of the connections of Jess Good Wine in the Mr Jet Moore Stakes. The race, a restricted Grade 2 for Oklahoma-breds, 3 and older, is named for the 1972 American Quarter Horse Association World Champion who was also the victor of the very first Champion of Champions.

Remington Park racing continues Sunday with a 4 p.m. first post time.
