Jesst For Speed Prevails In $68,175 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby

SHAKOPOEE, MN—AUGUST 10, 2022—Jesst For Speed put in a steady effort under jockey Gonzalo Gutierrez to defeat Relentless Courage by half-a-length in the $68,175 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby on Wednesday night at Canterbury Park.

Trainer Mallory Norton saddled Jesst For Speed to his first career stakes win for owner Bryton Dewald. The son of leading sire Apollitical Jess completed the 400 yards in :19.740 seconds, a 101 speed index into a 12 mph crosswind.

Bred in Utah, from the Corona Cartel mare Shaded In Speed, Jesst For Speed has won four of 15 career starts and earned $30,679 tonight to improve his earnings record to $98,077. Jesst For Speed was a finalist in the Oklahoma Derby(G3) at Remington Park in March.

Runner-up Relentless Courage earned $12,010 for owners Tom Maher and Paul Luedemann. Trainer Jason Olmstead named jockey Jorge Torres to ride the son of leading sire Hes Relentless from the Stoli mare Newport Lily.

Bred in Minnesota by Harold Jeanotte, Relentless Courage is a multiple stakes winner of $100,185.  He won the Minnesota QH Futurity, North Star Futurity and MQHRA SSA Futurity at Canterbury Park last season.

Relentless Legacy, another stakes winning son of Hes Relentless, finished a head back to earn $6,005 for third. Also trained by Olmstead and owned by Maher, the bay gelding was ridden by jockey Tanner Thedford. Donald Friesen bred the 3-year-old in Minnesota from the Streakin La Jolla mare Legacys A Streaking.

An earner of $32,402, Relentless Legacy won the North Star State Derby two races back at Canterbury Park.

Waitin On Eight, Tres Elegance, Captivate This, Apolitical Sass, Runaway Separtely, Five Bar Fantasy and Hallelujah 21 completed the field.
