Seattle Cartel Prevails In $47,498 Adequan® Grants Pass Derby Challenge

GRANTS PASS, OR—JULY 5, 2021—Making only his fourth career start, fastest qualifier Seattle Cartel battled Dahock to a nose win in the $47,498 Adequan® Grants Pass Derby Challenge Monday night at Grants Pass Downs. Dahock, who finished 1-¼ lengths ahead of the field in second, was DQ'd after the race by the track stewards and placed fourth for interference.

Seattle Cartel drifted in under jockey Cesar Moreno while completing the 400 yards in :19.788 seconds, equaling a 102 speed index over the "fast" racing surface. The $21,849 winner's purse boosted his bankroll to $26,647 off a (4) 3-0-1 record.

Jose Gomez trains the son of champion sire The Louisiana Cartel for owner-breeder Javier Olmos. The black gelding was bred in Washington from the Mr Eye Opener mare Misterious Lady.

Tonight's win also earned Seattle Cartel a starting spot in the $150,000-est. Grade 3 Adequan® Derby Challenge Championship on October 23rd during the Bank of America Challenge Championships at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Super Bowl Sunny Day was moved from third to second after the disqualification and earned $9,500 for the effort. Also trained by Gomez, the son of Pyc Prize Time was ridden by jockey Taylor Smith.

Owned by Gilberto Madrigal, the stakes-placed gelding is out of Holland Last Star by Holland Ease. Alejandro Moya bred Super Bowl Sunny Day in Oregon. The gelding has earned $25,926 in 11 starts.

Jess Ozzy, a multiple stakes-placed son of multiple stakes sire Jess My Moon, was moved up to third. Owned by Ralph Young and Sandy Battles, the sorrel gelding is trained by Treece Figueroa. Jose Figueroa was aboard the Montana-bred from the Apollo (TB) mare Jungle Song.

The $4,750 third-place Adequan payday boosted Jess Ozzy's earnings to $20,225. Young is also the breeder.

Completing the official order of finish were Dahock, Relentless Six, Miss Fancy Alleia Louisiana Bunny, Marcelino, Lionized and One Sweet Lippy.
