SHAKOPEE, MN–AUGUST 18, 2026–The Thursday evening card at Canterbury Park will spotlight Quarter Horse racing with an eight-race program starting at 5:10 p.m. The featured events of the night are the $59,400 Northlands Futurity and the $36,675 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby, which will bring together talented juveniles and proven sophomores for a pair of competitive stakes finales.
The second race on the card will feature ten two-year-olds in the $59,400 Northlands Futurity. The field earned its places in the August 6 trial heats and will return to the gate Thursday evening to race 350 yards.
Why So Political leads the field as the 2-1 morning-line favorite after posting the fastest qualifying time. The filly enters the final with a two-race winning streak, digging in through the stretch of her trial to prevail by a neck and secure the quickest time of the night.
Cavenaugh Quarter Horses, LLC's Oklahoma homebred, Why So Political, is by Apollitical Jess and out of the First Down Dash mare Why. Jason L. Olmstead trains Why So Political and will send her from post six with jockey Gonzalo R. Valles, Jr. aboard as she looks to extend her winning streak on the stakes stage.
Stablemate Sheza, a Sugar Momma, brings stakes-winning credentials into the final as the 5-2 second choice on the morning line. The filly finished third in her trial after a close battle to the wire, beaten by only a neck. Before the trials, she had put together consecutive victories, highlighted by a win in the $49,000 MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity.
Sheza a Sugar Momma has been remarkably consistent in her first four starts, recording two victories, a second, and a third. The daughter of Hes Relentless is out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Candy Coated and was bred in Minnesota by Summer Run, Inc. She races for Tom Maher and Paul Luedemann and is conditioned by Olmstead, who will saddle her from post five with his son, Ryder Olmstead, aboard.
The stakes action will continue in the third race, when ten three-year-olds return from the August 6 trials for the $36,675 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby. The sophomores will run 400 yards at approximately 6:06 p.m., with an accomplished field lining up for the final.
Uncle Redheads leads the field as the 2-1 morning-line favorite and brings an impressive record of consistency into Thursday's showdown. The gelding has finished first or second in every start this season, highlighted by a victory in the Grade 3 Mr Master Bug Stakes and a second-place finish in the Grade 3 Jack Brooks Stakes.
Throughout his career, Uncle Redheads has finished in the money in 13 of 15 starts, earning $254,487 for Cavenaugh Quarter Horses, LLC. His combination of graded-stakes experience and consistency makes him a formidable presence as he seeks to add another stakes victory to his résumé.

With the fastest juvenile qualifier aiming to extend her winning streak, a stakes-winning stablemate waiting alongside her, and an accomplished graded-stakes performer leading the Derby field, Thursday night's featured races promise plenty of competition. The Northlands Futurity will showcase an emerging group of two-year-olds over 350 yards, before the sophomores take center stage in a tightly contested 400-yard Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby.
