MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity draws field of 10; Olmstead seeks fifth consecutive Bob Morehouse

SHAKOPEE, MN–JULY 22, 2026–Canterbury Park’s eight-race program on Thursday begins with a pair of quarter horse stakes, the $29,500 Bob Morehouse and the $49,354 MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity. Canterbury Hall of Fame trainer Jason Olmstead has won the Morehouse eight times including the past four renditions.

He will saddle even-money favorite Relentless Legacy who won the 350 yard stake last year. Olmstead also has the top four favorites in the futurity, a race that he has won four times. The MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity dates back to 1986 when it was won by Cash Caravan, one of the first members of the Shakopee racetrack’s hall of fame.

Sheza a Sugar Momma is one of two Minnesota breds in the field of 10 entered for the futurity. The 2-year-old filly, owned by Tom Maher and Paul Luedemann, won the $29,000 North Star State Futurity June 18 at Canterbury. The 9 to 5 morning line choice will be ridden by Olmstead’s 16-year-old son Ryder Omstead who was aboard in the North Star State, the first futurity win of his career.

Olmstead and Haley Hobbs are tied for top trainer honors with four wins each. Hobbs has two in the 350 yard futurity. Both are maidens. The remaining four in the field are trained by Tyler Stein and all are owned by Maher and sired by his stallion Hes Relentless.

Hobbs is well represented in the Morehouse, a race restricted to quarter horses bred in the state. She has three starters including North Star State Derby winner Del Cartel. Fernando Fonseco-Soto will ride L Gallito for Hobbs. The 6-year-old finished fourth in the Morehouse the past two years. Hobbs’ third entrant is Thirty Four Below who broke her maiden in her fourteenth attempt July 2.

Stel an Eagle was an impressive winner in a state bred conditions allowance July 2. Kody Kellenberger has the return mount for trainer Briannah McDaniel in the Morehouse.
