MILES CITY, MT–May 14, 2026—The Saturday afternoon card at Miles City Bucking Horse Sale will feature an exciting eight-race program, with all eyes focused on the seventh race and the running of the 300-yard, $15,000 Dan Lockie Derby. Eight of the ten fastest qualifiers have returned for the sophomore finale, with the talented three-year-olds scheduled to load into the gate at approximately 3:30 PM.
Leading the field is the fastest qualifier, Surfinoverthemoon, who stamped himself as the one to beat following a dominant trial victory. The gelding pulled away impressively to score by one and a quarter lengths while posting the top qualifying time, showcasing both early speed and finishing power heading into the derby final.
The consistent sophomore has started nine times in his career, with two wins, four runner-up finishes, and one third-place finish, earning $30,852 for owner Lana Matt. His reliability and sharp recent form make him a deserving standout entering Saturday’s feature.
Surfinoverthemoon is sired by Corona Surfer and out of the Apollo (TB) mare Dashmetothemoon. The Wyoming-bred gelding was bred by Larson Walter and will once again be saddled by trainer Jess R. Matt. He draws the far outside post position eight with jockey Jacob Cardenas named to ride.
With a talented lineup of proven qualifiers returning for the final, the Dan Lockie Derby shapes up to deliver an exciting and competitive showdown from start to finish. The quick 300-yard distance leaves little room for mistakes, and fans and bettors alike can expect a thrilling blanket finish as these sophomores battle for derby glory on Saturday afternoon at Miles City.
