OPELOUSAS, LA–NOVEMBER 18, 2025Evangeline Downs will spotlight thirty-six sophomores on Saturday evening as they compete across four trial heats for a coveted spot in the $50,000-added Evangeline Downs Derby finals on December 20. The trials are featured on an eight-race card, with races three through six set at 400 yards. The first heat is scheduled to begin at approximately 6:25 PM, launching a competitive series where only the top ten qualifiers will advance.

Famous Flying Cowgirl leads the conversation in the third race as the 8-5 morning line favorite. The in-form filly enters off back-to-back victories, including the $25,000 French Quarters Stakes, and previously finished third in the G3 $130,000 Firecracker Derby. She brings five career wins and $86,232 in earnings for owner Raul A. Beltran Moreno, who secured her for $15,000 at the Heritage Place Sale.

The daughter of Flying Cowboy 123 is out of the One Famous Eagle mare Famous Numbers Fly and was bred in Louisiana by Grant Farms, LLC. Jose Carrizales trains, and she will break from post five under rider Randy Edison, Jr.

The sixth race and final trial heat features another 8-5 favorite in San Lorenzo Trump. Despite encountering trouble in his recent outings, the colt remains a serious contender. Earlier this year he captured the $111,000 Ol South Derby and qualified to the G3 $130,000 Firecracker Derby. With four career victories and $99,886 earned, he represents owner Rogelio Marquez, Jr., who purchased him for $110,000 at the Heritage Place Sale.

Sired by Apollitical Jess and out of Legacys a Streakin, a daughter of Streakin La Jolla, San Lorenzo Trump was bred in Oklahoma by Donald J. Friesen. Juan C. Garcia conditions the colt, who will start from post seven with regular pilot Leonardo Rodriguez aboard.

With proven stakes performers, high-end pedigrees, and competitive depth throughout, Saturday’s trials present a sharp preview of the strength heading toward the December 20 finals. Thirty-six sophomores will line up with one goal—posting one of the ten fastest times to secure a place in the $50,000-added Evangeline Downs Derby.
