ROCK VIEW COUNTY, AB–OCTOBER 9, 2025—The Friday evening program at Century Downs opens with a bang, as the $39,486-added (CAN) Alberta Bred Derby takes center stage as the featured event on a stacked ten-race card. Ten of Alberta’s top three-year-old Quarter Horses will break from the gate in Race 1 at approximately 6:15 PM, each looking to claim top honours in the 400-yard sprint.
Headlining the field is Flash Me A Corona, the 8-5 morning line favourite. The three-year-old gelding turned heads in the September 26th trial heats, winning his division and posting the third-fastest qualifying time. Trained by Craig Robert Smith and ridden by Ricardo Moreno, Flash Me a Corona will break from post four in the Derby finale.
Flash Me A Corona has been a consistent and formidable force on the Alberta racing circuit. He kicked off his Derby campaign with consecutive stakes wins in the $21,000 Century Mile Horsemen’s Derby Division 1 and the $20,000 Millarville Maturity, followed by solid third-place finishes in both the $34,000 All Canadian Derby and the $32,000 Canada Cup Derby. With seven wins, two seconds, and seven third-place finishes from 17 career starts, he boasts earnings of $69,957.
Bred in Alberta by Ralph Danard, Flash Me a Corona is sired by Obsessed With Corona, out of the First Moonflash mare Look Back Moonflash. He was purchased for a modest $7,500 at the AQHRA Canada Sale by co-owners Janet Patriquin and Ralph E. Danard.
The top qualifier from the trial heats is Ima Hott Version, who will break from post six at 5-2 morning line odds. Conditioned by Misael Moreno and ridden by Daniel Tavares, the filly appears to be regaining her best form at just the right time.
After ending her two-year-old season with back-to-back wins, Ima Hott Version struggled to find her rhythm earlier this year. However, a sharp runner-up effort in the $32,000 Canada Cup Derby last out has signaled a return to top shape. She enters the Derby finale with earnings of $39,783.
The daughter of Winners Version, out of the Tres Seis mare Im Hott Ur Nott, was also bred in Alberta by Ralph Danard. She was a $42,000 purchase at the AQHRA Canada Sale by owners Laci Brunelle and Darby Danard.
The Alberta Bred Derby showcases locally bred talent and kicks off a promising night of Quarter Horse racing at Century Downs. With a deep and competitive field of ten, including proven stakes performers and emerging contenders, the race is shaping up to be one of the highlights of the fall meet.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early, with post time for Race 1 set for 6:15 PM. With purse money, pride, and provincial bragging rights on the line, the Alberta Bred Derby promises a thrilling start to Friday night's action.
