SELMA, TX–AUGUST 12, 2025–Cowboy Heartbreak, a three-time 2025 winner and one of the most consistent Paint runners in Texas, will lead a competitive field in the $30,327 Colors of The Alamo Paint and Appaloosa Maturity, set for Saturday, August 16, at Retama Park.
The 350-yard event for 3-year-olds and up Paints and Appaloosas will go as Race 1 on the card. First post for the evening’s program is 6:00 p.m. (CDT).
Cowboy Heartbreak (PT), the 7-2 morning-line choice from post 7, comes into the Maturity in top form for owner-trainer Zackery N. Rios. The 3-year-old sorrel gelding by Boknaai (QH) out of Camo Cowgirl, by Awesome Chrome, has won three of five starts this year, including a sharp victory in the July 19 Gillespie County Fair Stakes, where he edged V Golden Game by a nose in 18.016.
Bred in Texas by Sandra Garnett, Cowboy Heartbreak also captured an allowance at Sam Houston in May over Rosario Tijeras and Wl Karma, stopping the clock in 17.950 for 350 yards. Nestor Duran has the return call aboard the $50,696 earner.
V Golden Game (PT), 4-1 on the morning line from post 4, has proven to be Cowboy Heartbreak’s most formidable rival in recent months. The 4-year-old gelding by leading APHA sire CRM Livewire out of Game Hi (QH), by Game Patriot (QH), races for Oscar Rivera Cardona and is trained by Raul Rodriguez, Jr.
He earned a stakes win at Sam Houston on June 7, defeating Cowboy Heartbreak by a neck in 18.095, and just missed repeating that score in the Gillespie County Fair Stakes, finishing second by a nose.
A multiple stakes-placed earner of over $75,000, V Golden Game was bred in Oklahoma by Aubrey L. Garcia. Victor M. Urieta, Jr. will ride.
Rosario Tijeras (PT), 9-2 on the morning line from post 6, will look to turn the tables on both favorites after several close finishes in stakes company. The 3-year-old filly by Boknaai (QH) out of Tres Miracles, by View Me Flying (QH), is owned and bred in Texas by Sarah Huskey and trained by Esteban Rubio.
A maiden winner in May at Sam Houston, Rosario Tijeras has since posted runner-up finishes to both Cowboy Heartbreak and Pt Rose, including a solid second in her most recent start on July 24. Eddie Sanchez will be aboard.
The Colors of The Alamo Paint and Appaloosa Maturity offers $10,000 in added funds from the TPHBA Event Fund and $17,237 from the HIEA, with purse distribution to the top finishers and a $7,500 bonus for Accredited Texas-bred 3-year-old Paints.
The race will be contested over 350 yards at Retama Park, where Paint This Kitty set the track record for the distance in 2014 with a time of 17.93.
