SELMA, TX–AUGUST 12, 2025– Saturday night’s $110,000 Sires’ Cup Derby at Retama Park will bring together a field of 3-year-olds sired by participating stallions, all of whom earned their spots through qualifying trials on August 2.
The 400-yard final will be contested as Race 11 on the card, with an approximate post time of 10:50 p.m. (CDT). First post for the evening’s program is set for 6:15 p.m.
Leading the field as the 2-1 morning line favorite is multiple graded stakes-placed Eagles Up, owned by Mario H. Vazquez and Jumonville Farms and trained by Jose Sanchez.
The Louisiana-bred son of One Famous Eagle out of U R Blue by Walk Thru Fire was bred by Jumonville Farms and sold for $75,000 at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale.
Eagles Up was an authoritative trial winner on August 2, stopping the clock in 20.243 while holding off a game challenger. He has been a model of consistency, with a career record of four wins, two seconds, and two thirds from ten starts, earning $112,743.
As a juvenile, he qualified for the Grade 2 Evangeline Downs Futurity and finished a close second in the final. He was also third in the Grade 3 Sam Houston Derby two races back. Luis L. Vivanco, who guided him in his trial victory, will again be in the irons.
The 3-1 second choice, Marfalous, comes into the final for owner Leviram Racing LLC and trainer Dimas Sanchez. Bred in Texas by Juan M. Jr. and Jairo Lozano, the gelded son of The Marfa Lights out of Mystical Desire by Desirio was a dominant wire-to-wire winner in his trial, posting a 20.288 clocking.
A multiple stakes finalist with earnings of $98,362, Marfalous has proven competitive at the graded level, including qualifying for the 2024 Dash For Cash Futurity (G2), Sam Houston Futurity(G2), and TQHA Sale Futurity (RG1).
Victor M. Urieta Jr., aboard for the trial win, retains the mount aboard the $98,362 earner.
Flyin Chilitos, the 9-2 third choice, will break from post 10 for owner Omar Paredes and trainer Leonel Hernandez. Claudia Miranda bred the Texas-bred son of second-crop sire Chilitos out of Sensational Senator by Louisiana Senator.
A double-registered AQHA/APHA, he boasts five wins and five seconds from 14 lifetime starts, earning $128,704. His résumé includes APHA stakes wins as a juvenile and second in the recent Firecracker Derby(G3) at Delta Downs.
In his Sires’ Cup Derby trial, Flyin Chilitos posted a 20.402 clocking to defeat a quality field, showing his characteristic early speed and determination. Eleazar R. Hernandez will take the reins once more.
With three proven stakes performers topping the wagering line, Saturday’s Sires’ Cup Derby promises a high-powered dash to the wire at Retama Park. The combination of class, trial form, and gate speed sets the stage for an exciting conclusion to this lucrative Texas-bred and -sired showcase.
