Tizlightning, 2023's Top 1,000 Yard Horse, To Make Season Debut On Sunday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA–FEBRUARY 23, 2024–Battle Born Racing's Tizlightning, who swept the two major races held at 1,000 yards at Los Alamitos in 2023, will make his season debut when he headlines the fourth race on Sunday night card here.

Trained by Jesus Uranga, Tizlightning will be in action in an $18,000 allowance at 1,000 yards while facing a strong field that includes the Ryan Hanson-trained Helladic, who scored a three-length victory in his Los Alamitos debut two months ago.

Tizlightning gets top billing in this race as the reigning PCQHRA Horse of the Year at 1,000 yards and the owner of the track record at this distance. The 5-year-old by Stanford won the $75,000 Los Alamitos Winter Final at this distance in gate to wire fashion by two lengths while also setting the new record of :51.35.

In similar fashion, he won the $50,000 Los Alamitos Summer Championship on June 18. All in all, he’s won five of his seven starts at Los Alamitos.

"We were fortunate to find this horse, acquiring him privately," said Nick Hines of Battle Born Racing. "This horse found his niche. When you write goals on paper and you can get to that goal, it just takes it to a whole new level."

Ricardo Ramirez, who is two for three aboard Tizlightning, will pilot him here from post two.

The field will also feature Ann McCurdy and Brian Pitnick's Proud Veteran, who ran second in the Winter Championship. The 6-year-old by Justin Phillips has finished second or higher in 10 of 20 career starts. This also represents his 2024 debut.

Battle Born Racing’s Winding, a winner here on January 28, will be joined by Piper’s Causeway and Broken Circle to complete the field.

Congratulations to jockey Jose Rosario Alcala, who enjoyed his first career victory when he piloted the Angela Aquino-trainee After Sundown to a first-place finish at 11-1 in the second race on Sunday.

The win gave Rosario Alcala his first Thoroughbred riding win. The young pilot then added a second victory and his first on a Quarter Horse when he guided Good Reason Jess to victory in race seven.

A well-bred gelding sired by Apollitical Jess and out of the Grade 1 winner Jess Good Reason, Good Reason Jess returned $17 for the win.
