OPELOUSAS, LA--NOVEMBER 20, 2023--Twenty-two state-bred 3-year-olds are entered in Saturday's 400-yard Louisiana QHBA Breeders' Derby (RG3) trials at Evangeline Downs.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the December 16, $100,000-added final.
Konnan Cartel, a homebred son of Five Bar Cartel trained by Juan Diaz Jr. for owner Dania Castellanos, will be shortening in distance off of his nose victory in the open 440-yard, $176,000 Dash For Cash Derby (G2) at Lone Star Park on October 7. The brown gelding was coming off of a Delta Downs summer campaign during which he won two Louisiana-bred stakes, including the 400-yard, $145,000 Delta Downs Derby (RG3) on July 15.
Konnan Cartel drew post 7 and will be ridden by Victor Urieta Jr. in the third of three trials.
Rogelio Marquez Jr.'s San Lorenzo Jet made his season debut with a fifth-place run in a 440-yard All American Derby (G1) trial on August 13. However, the gelded son of Jet Black Patriot banked $887,910 from six races during his 2-year-old season, and he won three graded stakes, including the state's richest Quarter Horse race, the 400-yard, $1-million LQHBA Million Futurity (RG1) at Evangeline Downs.
San Lorenzo Jet drew post 4 and will be ridden by David Alvarez for trainer Jesus M. Marquez.
