ENDMONTON, ONT–JUNE 28, 2025–Two trials for the $30,000-added John Deere Century Mile Juvenile Challenge took place on Saturday, showcasing impressive performances that set the stage for the final on July 19. The winner of this final will secure a spot in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship, scheduled for October 18 in Albuquerque.
West Southwest, a 2-year-old filly by Mpshinning, qualified with the fastest time of the day after taking command at the first call and drawing off to win by a half-length over O Sawyer. Ridden by Alfredo Torres Amador, she stopped the clock in 18.006 for 350 yards, earning a 90 speed index in her second career start. The effort paid $14.80 on a $2.00 wager.
Previously, the filly had a troubled sixth place in her maiden voyage at Los Alamitos in April. She is owned by Jerry Stojan and trained by William H. Leech. West Southwest was bred in California by Steve D. Burns, DVM, out of Western Coast by Hawkinson and was a $20,000 purchase from the 2024 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale.
O Sawyer followed the winner home and recorded the second-fastest qualifying time of 18.073. He has yet to break his maiden in four career starts but turned in a determined effort to earn a spot in the final.
O Sawyer is owned and trained by Wesley T. Oulton, who also bred the gelding in Alberta in partnership with Susen A. Oulton. The a 2-year-old gelding by First Timber is out of Lets Get Going, by Separatist. He was ridden by Daniel Alejandro Garcia in the trial.
Both qualifiers advanced from the first of two trial races and will return to compete for the $30,000-added purse in the July 19 final.
