Hot Pepper Jess Has The Sting For Victory In Scorpion Stakes

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 20, 2011—Friday night’s featured $27,400 Scorpion Stakes required a great start and all out power over 220 yards. Hot Pepper Jess was one of six flying to the finish within a half-length of each other, grabbing victory by a nose.

Owned by Jack & Joyce McClennen of Duncan, Okla. and trained by Luis Villafranco, Hot Pepper Jess was ridden by Kenny Muntz. The Oklahoma-bred 4-year-old gelding edged Quik Brew at the finish by a nose with The Regal Streak another head behind in third.

Hot Pepper Jess covered 220 yards on a fast track in :11.745 seconds.

Away at 8-1 odds, Hot Pepper Jess paid $18.60 to win, $ 5.80 to place and $3.80 to show. Quik Brew, the beaten 2-1 wagering favorite, paid $3.60 to place and $2.40 to show. The Regal Streak returned $6 to show.

The Scorpion Stakes win was the fifth from 13 career starts for Hot Pepper Jess and the fourth at Remington Park. A son of Take Off Jess from the Tour De Kas mare High Flying Duck, Hot Pepper Jess earned $16,500 for the win, pushing his lifetime bankroll to $100,853. He was bred in Oklahoma by Jack and Dan McClennen.

Quick Brew is a 5-year-old Corona Cartel horse owned by Adam Jasso Seijas. Bred in Walt Fletcher, the sorrel earned $5,900. Heath Taylor trains with champion jockey G.R. Carter, Jr. getting the riding assignment.

Brent Clay saddled The Regal Streak for Michael Ahern. The 4-year-old daughter of A Regal Choice ridden by Stormy Smith earned $2,750.

Remington Park will open early Saturday to carry simulcast racing from Pimlico in Baltimore on Preakness Stakes Day. Doors open at 9:15am with the first simulcast from Pimlico at 9:45am.

Remington Park live racing Saturday begins earlier than normal at 5pm, followed almost immediately by the simulcast of the Preakness Stakes where Animal Kingdom attempts to defeat 13 others to continue his quest for the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing.
