Fooseylady Scores Second Stakes Victory in Boyd Varney Memorial Derby

MALAD CITY, ID–AUGUST 8, 2026–Fooseylady added a second stakes victory to her resume Saturday afternoon with a half-length victory in the $4,600 Boyd Varney Memorial Derby at the Oneida County Fair.

Ridden by Carlos Castruita, Fooseylady broke on top and maintained the advantage throughout the 300-yard event, stopping the clock in :15.307 for a 102 speed index. Ozark Mountain chased throughout to finish second, while Redmann rallied late for third.

Fooseylady races for owner-trainer Roberto Ortiz. Bred in Utah by Antonio Tinoco, the sorrel filly is by Foose and out of the Ausual Suspect mare Laazteca.

The victory marked the second stakes win for Fooseylady, who also captured the 2025 Hadley Giles Futurity. She has compiled a 9-4-1-1 record with earnings of $62,393.

Brayan Juarez rode runner-up Ozark Mountain for owner-breeder John McBride and trainer Luis Olivas. The gelding is by Jr Dynasty Mountain and out of the Dashair mare Miss Dashin Paris. He has compiled a 9-3-3-0 record with earnings of $9,075.

Redmann and jockey Raphael Romero finished third after making a late effort. Owned by Bryan Romero and trained by Honer Romero, the gelding was bred by Jolynn Wheeler and Cinda Thomas. He is by Red Oak Special and out of the Forged mare She Forged It.

Redmann has won five of 14 starts with one second and two thirds and earnings of $22,004. His stakes resume includes a victory in the Roche Equine Veterinary Services Futurity.

Cartels Speedo, Mz Whisky and Mountain Snow Flake completed the order of finish.

The Boyd Varney Memorial Derby was contested over a fast track under clear skies. The $4,600 purse awarded $2,760 to the winner.
