Why So Political records the fastest qualifying time from two Northlands Futurity trials Thursday at Canterbury Park.

SHAKOPEE, MN–AUGUST 6, 2026–Why So Political wore down Livin D Dream and post-time favorite Sheza A Sugar Momma Thursday evening at Canterbury Park to post the fastest qualifying time for the $59,400 Northlands Futurity.

Nineteen 2-year-olds competed in two 350-yard trials for a spot in the August 20 final, with the three fastest times coming from the opening trial.

Ridden by Gonzalo Valles Jr., Why So Political broke fourth from the gate before steadily making up ground. The daughter of Apollitical Jess caught Livin D Dream and Sheza A Sugar Momma approaching the wire to win by a neck in :18.068.

Why So Political has won two of six starts and earned $16,191. She was also a finalist in the Prairie Meadows Gold Juvenile Stakes.

Bred and owned by Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC, Why So Political is out of Why by First Down Dash. Jason L. Olmstead trains the filly, who was a $42,000 repurchase at the 2025 Heritage Place Yearling Sale.

Stablemate Livin D Dream finished with the second-fastest qualifying time of :18.106 under jockey Jose Alonzo Lopez. The Uncle D filly has finished in the top three in each of her five starts, compiling a record of 1-1-3 with earnings of $27,188. She finished third in the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity.

Bred and owned by Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC, Livin D Dream is out of Teller Im Alive by First Down Dash. Olmstead also trains the filly, who was a $14,000 repurchase at the 2025 Heritage Place Yearling Sale.

Sheza A Sugar Momma completed the top three qualifiers with a time of :18.127 for owners Tom Maher and Paul Luedemann. Ryder Olmstead was aboard for trainer Jason Olmstead.

A multiple stakes winner, Sheza A Sugar Momma has won two of four starts with one second and one third while earning $42,220. Her victories include the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity and the North Star State Futurity.

Bred in Minnesota by Summer Run Inc., Sheza A Sugar Momma is out of Candy Coated Paint by PYC Paint Your Wagon. She is a daughter of Hes Relentless.
