POCATELLO, ID–MAY 25, 2025–Flybyby delivered a sharp effort to take down top honors in Sunday’s running of the Gary & Sharilyn Blattner Memorial Derby at Pocatello Downs.
The $23,400 stakes race, contested at 350 yards for 3-year-olds, brought together a competitive field of sophomores. Still, Flybyby, piloted by Julian Zavala, proved she had what it takes to win with a 3/4-length victory over fastest qualifier from the trials Notin Missing Here.
Breaking sharply from the gate, the daughter of Five Bar Cartel drove to the front at the final stretch and never looked back, crossing the wire in 17.467 seconds, clocking a 104 speed index. The filly earned a winner’s purse of $10,764, boosting her bankroll to $37,039.
She remains undefeated for 2025 and has a lifetime record of 3-2-1 from six starts. Trained by Adrian Zavala, Flybyby placed second in the Bitterrot Futurity-G3 and Pocatello Downs Spring Classic Futurity last year.
Bred by Arkofa Farm, the Louisiana-bred filly is out of the Apollitical Jess mare Fly By You. Owned by Adrian Zavala, Flybyby was purchased for $18,500 in the 2024 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale.
Notin Missing Here, ridden by Jesus Canales, ran a solid race, claiming the runner-up spot, finishing with a photo finish by a nose over Heza Flashy Eagle and rider Jorge Garcia.
The Utah-bred filly, bred by McColee Land & Livestock LLC, is out of Missmerizing by Pyc Paint Your Wagon. The daughter of Kvn Corona is owned by Michael McKell and ridden by J. Canales. She has lit the board eight of 11 starts and earned $42,381.
Rounding out the top three was Heza Flashy Eagle, a gelded son of One Fabulous Eagle out of Flashy Moon Pie by First Moonflash. Bred in Oklahoma by Royal Vista Ranches he is campaigned by owner Ron Cameron.
Heza Flashy Eagle is also conditioned by Sergio Canales and was ridden by Jorge Garcia. He has earned two wins from nine starts with $26,309 in the bank, including the Bitterroot Juvenile Invitational last year.
