POCATELLO, ID–MAY 25, 2025–A flawless break and sustained speed carried The Great One to a decisive second career win in Sunday’s Spring Classic Maiden Frolic Stakes (not black type) at Pocatello Downs, capturing the $12,900 feature with authority against a field of older maiden colts and geldings going 300 yards.

Breaking sharply from the rail under jockey Jose Figueroa, The Great One immediately separated from the field and never looked back, surging home 2½ lengths in front to stop the clock in :15.420 over a fast track.

The 3-year-old sorrel gelding, by champion Foose and out of One Famous Strawfly by One Famous Eagle, earned a 104 speed index for the performance and collected the winner’s share of $6,192.

Bred and owned by Matthew Huse of Oregon and trained by Freddy Ibarra, The Great One entered the stakes final off a maiden win in the May 4 trials. He improved sharply in the final, flashing early foot that proved uncatchable.

Behind the winner, a dead heat for second showcased a pair of determined closers. Mz Cartel, a gelding by Big Daddy Cartel trained by Adrian Zavala, surged late from post four under jockey Julian Zavala to earn his share of the place position. Owned and bred by Miguel Zavala of Utah, from the Fly Jess Fly mare Miss Flying Jessie, Mz Cartel posted a final time of :15.850 and a speed index of 89.

Sharing the runner-up honors was Jess Chip, a son of Jess Got Easier conditioned by David and owned  by Nadine Newbold. Ridden by Nick Newbold, Jess Chip also posted :15.850, matching Mz Cartel in a strong closing effort from post five. He is out of Hadtobebasic, by Hadtobenuts.

Fourth went to Church Appeal, who ran evenly under Eric Ayala, followed by Bridle On a Bull, First Flash Down, Gh Squishy Lips, and Spartan Cartel.

The stakes race was open to 3-year-olds and up that remained eligible following the trial series. Conditions were ideal, with clear skies and temperatures in the mid-70s.

The race marked a significant maiden score for The Great One, who could become a name to watch in the Intermountain region as the season progresses.
