OKLAHOMA CITY, OK–MAY 18, 2025–Jessies First Card jumped out of the gate like burning toast and never looked back as Remington Park leading jockey Juan Pulido won his fourth race of the day to take a 25-win lead in the local jockeys’ standings on Sunday.
It was only last month that Pulido was mired in third place in the standings, looking up at leading rider Francisco Calderon. Now Pulido has 63 trips to the winner’s circle while Calderon sits in second with 38 victories.
An indication of just how dominant Pulido has been the past 30 days, Calderon is 14 wins ahead of Roman Cruz and Mario Delgado, who are tied for third with 24 apiece. If Pulido weren’t here, Calderon would be the runaway leader.
Speaking of runaways, Pulido and Jessies First Card were on the lead with 4-5 heavy wagering favorite Five Bar Phi as a tandem pair in the 350-yard open allowance race for 3-year-olds-and-older. Five Bar Phi had won two of his last three starts, but it was Jessies First Card that was too stubborn to lose.
Jessies First Card, a 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly by Docs First Card, out of the Apollitical Jess mare Jess Proved Youwrong, held on to win by a neck as the Five Bar Phi faded to third.
Designated Eagle (5-1) had a wad of money bet on him in the early wagering, making him the smart-money favorite, but could do no better than finish as the runner-up, losing by a neck. He was a head in front of Five Bar Phi in the three-horse photo for the win.
Trainer Jose Gamez has sent Jessies First Card out three times this meet at Remington Park and the young filly has won two of those three tries. The only one she lost was last time out in an open allowance race against Five Bar Phi, finishing third by a quarter length.
She got her revenge Sunday after she overcame some trouble out of the gate in that loss. Jessies First Card was sent off generous 4-1 odds for these red-hot connections that include owner Rito Sosa.
The trio of owner-trainer-jockey have been almost impossible to beat at this meet. Gamez, alone, has had horses start 32 times this meet and won with 10 of them. He had only two in Sunday night and won with both of them, completing the late daily double all by himself. Prior to Jessies First Card winning the 11th, Gamez also won with One Fine Fancy in the 10th.
Gamez has won eight races for owner Sosa, with Pulido up, from 12 attempts.
Jessies First Card earned $22,125 from the $37,240 allowance purse and improved her record to eight starts, four wins, and four thirds for a bankroll of $67,944. She was bred by Sosa and Jose E. Guzman.
Jessies First Card returned $10 to win, $5.40 to place and $3 to show. Her running time for the 350 yards was :17.409, earning a speed index of 96 over the fast track.
Remington Park racing continues May 22-25, Thursday through Sunday. The first race nightly is at 6pm with Sunday action at 4pm. All times are Central.
