$88,000 Ruidoso Select Graduate, Boradbent Is Fastest New Mexican Spring Futurity Qualifier

SUNLAND PARK, NM—MARCH 15, 2025–Broadbent, an $88,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduate, broke his maiden at first asking today when he posted the fastest qualifying time for the restricted Grade 2 New Mexican Spring Futurity at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.

Today's ten-fastest qualifiers from 10 trials contest for accredited New Mexico bred 2-year-olds will return Saturday, April 5, to vie for the winner’s share of the $348,900 purse going a distance of 300 yards.

Broadbent showed early speed under jockey Luis Flores-Garcia as he kicked clear to win by 1-1/4 lengths. His 14.988 clocking, the day’s fastest, equaled a 99-speed index with a 24 mph tailwind.

Eric Valenzuela trains the son of leading New Mexico sire Eye Am King for owner Tungsten Racing Partnership.  Leading breeder MJ Farms bred the sorrel gelding in New Mexico from the RG3-placed Blushing Bug mare Bridgett Bordeaux.   Broadbent is a brother to New Mexico State Fair Derby(RG3) winner Vintage Bourdeaux.

Bv China Dawl, a $50,000 Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Yearling Sale graduate, battled early in the fourth trial, then kicked clear to win by one length in the second-fastest clocking of 15.084 seconds, a 96-speed index.

Also, from the Eric Valenzuela stable, the trained tapped jockey Jordy Muniz to ride the daughter of Eye Am King for owner Bella Valenzuela. MJ Farms bred the first-time starter from the Oklahoma Futurity(G3) winner, China Rush by Rushago. Bv China Dawl is a sister to Young Emperor, who finished third in the restricted Grade 1 Zia Futurity at Ruidoso Downs last summer.

Valenzuela led all trainers with three finalists. Julian Zavala was the only other with multiples, getting the sixth and seventh fastest qualifiers.  MJ Farms bred five of 10 New Mexican Spring Futurity qualifiers.
