Tell Cartel continues to carve out his place among the nation’s most reliable young stallions, adding four more stakes qualifiers to his growing résumé over the past week—and doing it in three different states.
The second-crop stallion, who has already sired two stakes winners this year, sent out a pair of qualifiers to the AQRA Futurity at Turf Paradise, another to the EVD Futurity-G2 at Evangeline Downs, and one to the Southern California Derby-G2 at Los Alamitos.
AQRA FUTURITY
At Turf Paradise, three trials for the $75,000-est. AQRA Futurity were held December 3, producing a competitive field of Arizona-bred juveniles for the December 26 final at 350 yards. The fastest of them all was Alitlelesstalk, a gelded son of Tell Cartel who delivered a determined nose victory in his trial.
Stopping the clock in 17.886, he posted the quickest time of the afternoon after battling stride-for-stride through the lane. Bred and owned by Carolyn and Ralph Fales, trained by Matthew M. Fales, and ridden by Luis A. Valenzuela, the Arizona-bred gelding also captured the Desert Classic Futurity earlier this year. He has now won two of five starts, earning $48,982.
Nonika Cartel, another juvenile by Tell Cartel, also qualified from the same heat. The Arizona-bred filly, owned and bred by Rene Carreon, is out of Mystoli by Stoli. Trained by Armando Castellanos and ridden by Jacob Enriquez, she secured her place in the December 26 final, giving Tell Cartel two finalists from a single trial.
EVD FUTURITY-G2
Tell Cartel’s reach extended east to Louisiana as Jess Telling Beau earned his spot in the EVD Futurity-G2 at Evangeline Downs. Trials were contested on November 21, setting up the $150,000 final on December 20. The four-time winner, who previously was a finalist in the Old South Futurity, continued his consistent season for owner and breeder Francisco Javier Garza.
Trained by Luis R. Martinez, Jr. and ridden by Jorge Javier Garcia, the gelding is out of Jess Jumpn Beau by Apollitical Jess. From six starts, he has compiled four wins and a third with earnings of $23,670, becoming yet another sharp juvenile representing his sire on the national stage.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DERBY-G2
Rounding out the week was Show N Tell Cartel, who added his name to the list of Southern California Derby-G2 qualifiers at Los Alamitos. Trials were held on November 30, with the final slated for December 30.
Already a proven stakes competitor, the Oklahoma-bred gelding is out of Celtic Rhythm by Apollitical Jess and carries a deep résumé. He won the El Primero Del Año Derby-G2 and was a finalist in the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 earlier this season. He was a runner-up in the Ah Sigh Handicap and a finalist in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1 as a juvenile.
Campaigned by Francos Ranch and Mario Tellez Montiel, he is trained by Elena Andrade. Ridden by Cesar Franco, he has made 16 starts with three wins, five seconds, and two thirds, compiling earnings of $257,458. Bred by Link Newcomb, he remains the most accomplished runner to date by Tell Cartel.
With qualifiers emerging across Arizona, Louisiana, and California, Tell Cartel once again demonstrated why he remains firmly entrenched among the nation’s leading young sires—versatile, productive, and capable of putting competitive runners on the track in any region. His momentum shows no signs of slowing as multiple finalists prepare to represent him in major end-of-year stakes.
From two crops to race, Tell Cartel has sired over a million dollars with 10 black type horses (18%) and $19,144 average earnings per starter.
