CALGARY, AB—SEPTEMBER 26, 2025—Two trials were contested Friday afternoon at Century Downs to determine the field for the $30,000(CAN)-added Alberta Bred Derby, with the 10 fastest 3-year-olds advancing to the 400-yard final on Sunday, October 12.
Ima Hott Version posted the day's fastest qualifying time, while Flash Me A Corona won the second trial to get the third fastest clocking.
In the opening heat, Ima Hott Version surged to the front and held gamely under jockey Daniel Tavares to record the fastest clocking of the afternoon at 20.035 seconds against a 25-mph tailwind.
The graded-placed filly is by Winners Version and out of Im Hott Ur Nott, a daughter of champion Tres Seis.
Bred in Alberta by Ralph Danard, she races for owners Laci Brunelle and Darby Danard and is trained by Misael Moreno. Ima Hott Version has already established herself as a top regional contender, after finishing second in the Canada Cup Derby in her last start September 13.
A three-time winner with earnings of nearly $40,000, she was purchased as a yearling at the AQHRA Canada QH Cup Yearling Sale for $42,000.
Rjs Boss, a stakes-winning son of Jd Wagon Boss out of Rj Bitterroot Babe by El Mistral, finished second in the same trial with a solid:20.247 effort, earning the second-fastest qualifying spot in the final.
T. Copithorne and G. Wills bred him in Alberta and raced him for Glenn K. Wills. O. Amador Hernandez rode the Buckey A. Stockwell trainee.
The second trial went to Flash Me A Corona, who broke sharply under Ricardo Moreno and kept to his task, finishing in 20.255 seconds. The gelded son of Obsessed With Corona is out of Look Back Moonflash, a daughter of First Moonflash.
Bred in Alberta by Ralph Danard, he is campaigned by Janet Patriquin and Ralph E. Danard and trained by Craig Smith. Flash Me A Corona was also purchased in the AQHRA Canada QH Cup Yearling Sale for $7,400. He has banked nearly $70,000 in 17 starts.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from both trials will return for the Alberta Bred Derby final on October 12 at Century Downs.
