AJAX, ONT–SEPTEMBER 17, 2025–Sassies Best streaked to victory in the annual Mayor's Cup at Ajax Downs on Wednesday, September 17, continuing a tradition that started eight years ago, which celebrates Quarter Horse racing and its place in the town of Ajax and the surrounding community.
The Mayor's Cup adds $1,500 to the purse for the winner of the designated race, this year won by Sassies Best, a 3-year-old filly owned by John Wilson of New Liskeard and trained by Scott Reid. Christian Benitez was the winning rider.
Mayor Shaun Collier was in attendance to present the Mayor's Cup cheque to the connections of Sassies Best.
"Today is a celebration of our community spirit and the vibrant tradition of horse racing that brings us all together," said Collier.
"Ajax Downs has been an integral part of the Ajax community since 1969; it's more than a racetrack, it's a gathering place that gives us a sense of pride and belonging that is unique to Ajax."
Wednesday was also a special event day for Unifor and some 700 retired members of Local 222 who enjoyed a sunny and warm day at the races. Members of Unifor joined Ice Cream Cartel in the winner's circle after the grey mare won the fourth race for Marie and Bob Broadstock.
A full house at Ajax Downs also saw the Thoroughbred Sea To Air win the Battle of the Breeds race at 770 yards over the Quarter Horse Jess a Deal. Sea to Air, who is based at Fort Erie, is owned by Robin Voyce, Malinda Schuit and Guadalupe Garcia and trained by Jeff Voyce. Ajax Downs' leading rider Ismael Mosqueira rode Sea to Air and he also won two races on the afternoon.
Also winning two races on the day were 2024 champion jockey Brian Bell and JB Botello
