EDMONTON, AB–SEPTEMBER 13, 2025–First Famous Prize refused to be denied in a photo finish to capture Saturday’s $22,759 (US) Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby at Century Mile.
Breaking first from the gate, First Famous Prize dueled stride for stride with Ima Hott Version before digging in at the final stretch to prevail by a head under regular rider Amador “Omar” Hernandez.
As her regular pilot, Hernandez knows the filly well and praised her grit afterward. “I felt confident. She had a powerful race, it wasn’t easy, but I am happy with how she performed,” he said. “I am also very happy for Bucky and grateful that he gave me the chance to ride her.”
The sorrel filly stopped the clock in 20.206 seconds with a 91 speed index in the 400-yard stakes against a 25 mph headwind. The victory returned $4.20 to win and awarded $10,241 (US) to her connections.
Trained by Buckey Stockwell for owners Commotion Creek Contracting and WT Ranches, Ltd., the daughter of One Famous Eagle has now won three of four starts this season, including the Century Mile Derby Challenge. She also placed second in the Evergreen Park Distaff Challenge, the only race she did not win in 2025.
She earned her first black type as a juvenile with a victory in the Canada QH Cup Futurity and second-place finish in the Century Mile Juvenile Challenge. She was also a finalist in the John Deere AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 and the Pocatello Downs Spring Classic Futurity.
First Famous Prize, bred in Texas by Weetona Stanley, is out of Fancy First Prize by Desirio. Initially sold for $32,000 in the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, she was later purchased by her current owners for $20,000 in the 2024 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale.
Runner-up Ima Hott Version, a chestnut filly by Winners Version, broke sharply and held a narrow advantage midway before being outfinished by the winner. Bred in Alberta by Ralph Danard, she is out of Im Hott Ur Nott by Tres Seis.
Owned by Laci Brunelle and Darby Danard, the filly is trained by Misael Moreno and was ridden by Daniel Tavares. Ima Hott Version has two wins and four seconds from ten starts, including runner-up efforts in last year’s Canada Cup Futurity-G3 and Sales Stakes Futurity.
Flash Me A Corona, bred in Alberta by Ralph Danard, completed the trifecta just a head behind the runner-up. The brown gelding by Obsessed With Corona is out of Look Back Moonflash by First Moonflash.
He is trained by Craig Smith for owners Janet Patriquin and Ralph E. Danard, with Ricardo Moreno in the irons. A consistent runner, Flash Me A Corona has hit the board in 15 of 16 starts with six victories, including the All Canadian Derby and Millarville Maturity this season.
Finishing in fourth-place was Tincture of Time, Rjs Boss crossed in fifth followed by O La Dee Da, Fabulous Persuasion, and Inseperable Cruise to complete the field.
