EDMONTON, AB–SEPTEMBER 13, 2025—Jerry Stojan’s home stable swept the top two spots in Saturday’s $64,291(US) Canada QH Cup Futurity(RG3) at Century Mile Racetrack, as the talented filly West Southwest surged to a convincing victory over her stablemate Warning Shott.

The race, contested at 400 yards for accredited Canadian-bred 2-year-olds, went off under clear skies with a 25 mph headwind on a fast track.

West Southwest, a brown filly by second-crop sire Mpshinning out of Western Coast by Hawkinson, broke alertly from the gate under jockey Ricardo Moreno and quickly established control, winning by 1 ½ lengths in a time of 20.305 seconds, good for a speed index of 89.

Bred in California by Steve D. Burns DVM, she is trained by William Leech and owned by Jerry Stojan. A $20,000 purchase at the 2024 Los Alamitos Equine Sale, she earned $28,931(US) for the victory to bring her earnings total to $38,268.

Stojan confirmed afterward that the multiple stakes-winning filly is likely done for the season, saying: "She is probably going home; she is done for the year."

Runner-up Warning Shott, also campaigned by Stojan and trained by Leech, gave a game effort but was no match for her stablemate. The gray filly also by Mpshinning out of Seperate Flight by Separatist, bred in California by Steve D. Burns DVM, finished two lengths ahead of the third-place horse.

Ridden by Alexander Marti, Warning Shot was a $11,000 purchase at the 2024 Los Alamitos Equine Sale and picked up $12,858 (US) for second place. Winless in six starts, she was third in the John Deere Century Mile Juvenile Challenge in July and has earned $2`1,747.

Third went to Hez D Man, a brown gelding by second-crop sire Uncle D out of Ll Talitha by Dealagame. Bred in Alberta by Morgan Luhoff, Hez D Man is owned by Commotion Creek Contracting and WT Ranches Ltd. and trained by Buckey Stockwell.

With Ramiro Castillo aboard, he rallied late after stumbling at the start, to earn $7,714(US) for his effort. Second in both the Sale Stakes Futurity and John Deere Century Mile Juvenile Challenge, Hez D Man has banked $34,077

The pari-mutuel returns reflected the upset behind the favored filly. West Southwest paid $5.80 to win, $3.90 to place, and $3.40 to show. Warning Shott returned $15.40 to place and $8.80 to show, while Hez D Man paid $4.40 to show.

Among the also-rans, O Sawyer was disqualified from third to fifth after causing interference, while Hot Cerveza was placed sixth after also being cited in the incident. Jess the Train, sent off as the heavy favorite, was sandwiched at the start and never recovered, finishing sixth. Wagon Burner 109 was outrun in seventh, and Santana Chicka was rank throughout and finished eighth.
