West Southwest Clocks Fastest Time In The Canada Cup QH Futurity-RG3 Trials

EDMONTON, ALB–AUGUST 30, 2025–The field for the Canada Cup QH Futurity [RG3] has been set following two trials held on Saturday at Century Mile. The top ten qualifiers will return for the $64,650 final on September 13, 2025, contested at 400 yards.

West Southwest posted the fastest time, stopping the clock in 20.402 seconds after a clean trip and edging clear late in the second trial. The daughter of Mpshinning was bred in California by Steve D. Burns DVM out of Western Coast by Hawkinson.

Leading trainer William Leech conditions her for owner Jerry Stojan, who purchased her for $20,000 in the Los Alamitos Equine Sale. With Ricardo Moreno aboard for the victory, West Southwest now has two wins from four starts with $9,337 in earnings, including a fourth-place finish in the Century Mile Juvenile Challenge.

Jess The Train turned in the second-fastest qualifying time of 20.465 in the opening trial, where she broke with early speed and never looked back, winning by two lengths.

The filly is by Freighttrain B and out of Jess Ballin the Jack by Feature Mr Jess. She was bred in Texas by Bob McClure and races for Commotion Creek Contracting and WT Ranches, Ltd. Trained by Buckey A. Stockwell and ridden by O. Amador Hernandez, Jess The Train remains unbeaten after two career starts, having broken her maiden on August 9 before this trial win.

O Sawyer finished strongly in the second trial, under Daniel Alejandro Garcia, to grab second behind West Southwest with a time of 20.505, the third-fastest of the day. The gelding is by First Timber and out of Lets Get Going by Separatist. He is bred and owned in Alberta by Wesley and Susen Oulton.

Wesley Oulton also trains O Sawyer, who brought his record to one win and three seconds from six starts with $25,401 in earnings. His résumé includes a victory in the Century Mile Juvenile Challenge on July 19.
