Jessies First Card Tops Speedhorse Derby Qualifiers With Fastest Time

TULSA, OK—JULY 2, 2025—Jessies First Card posted the fastest qualifying time in trials for the $25,000-Added Speedhorse Derby, setting up an exciting final for 3-year-old Quarter Horses sired by participating stallions at a distance of 350 yards.

The bay filly by multiple stakes sire Docs Best Card, out of Jess Proved Youwrong by Apollitical Jess, stopped the clock at 17.541,a 99 speed index. She recovered from a rough break with a strong finish to win her trial by a neck.

Bred in Oklahoma by Rito Sosa and Jose E. Guzman, Jessies First Card is owned by Rito Sosa and trained by Jose E. Gamez. Juan Pulido was aboard for the winning ride.

A winner of five of nine career starts, Jessies First Card has banked $70,782.

Just fractions behind was multiple graded staked winner Ima Fancy Eye Opener, who qualified second fastest with a time of 17.566.

The gelding, by multiple stakes sire Im A Fancy Pyc and out of Lil Miss Eye Opener by Mr Eye Opener, is bred in Oklahoma by Rhonda Valdivia. A winner of eight of 13 career starts, Ima Fancy Eye Opener races for Shania and Terry Dale Cox and is trained by Rhonda Valdivia with Bryan Candanosa in the irons.

Ima Fancy Eye Opener finished a close second to Jessies First Card in the fourth of five trials, losing by only a neck.

Winner of last year's Speedhorse Futurity(G3) and Easy Jet Stakes(G3), he won the Mr Master Bug Stakes (RG3) and was third in the Jack Brooks Stakes(G3) in his last start, May 31 at Remington Park. Ima Fancy Eye Opener has earned $254,540.

Stakes winner Flying Wrangler rounded out the top three qualifiers with a time of 17.642. The brown gelding by leading third-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123, out of Docs Dusty Dale by Okey Dokey Dale, dug in gamely between foes to win the last heat by a neck . He is bred and owned by Dusty Rose Ranch LLC and trained by Stacey L. Capps. Eugenio Alberto Navarrete, Jr. had the call aboard the talented gelding.

A five-time winner of $161,360, Flying Wrangler won the Cherokee Nation Stakes at Fair Meadows last year. He was also a finalist in the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity(RG1), the Black Gold Colts & Geldings Futurity, and was third in the Remington Park Derby(RG1) this year.
