MILES CITY, MT–May 14, 2026— The Saturday afternoon card at the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale will feature an exciting eight-race program packed with talented juveniles and proven sophomores ready to battle for top honors. The action heats up in race five with the $10,000 Bucking Horse Sale Futurity Consolation, before all eyes turn to the featured seventh race and the running of the 300-yard, $15,000 Dan Lockie Derby.
The Dan Lockie Derby will showcase eight of the ten fastest qualifiers returning for the sophomore finale, with the talented field scheduled to load into the gate at approximately 3:30 PM. Speed and consistency will headline the feature as the top qualifiers prepare for what promises to be an exciting stretch duel to the wire.
Leading the field is the fastest qualifier, Surfinoverthemoon, who stamped himself as the horse to beat with a dominant trial performance. The gelding powered away impressively to win by one and a quarter lengths, posting the top qualifying time and showing both explosive early speed and strong finishing ability heading into Saturday’s final.
The consistent sophomore has started nine times in his career, with two victories, four second-place finishes, and one third-place finish, earning $30,852 for owner Lana Matt. His reliability and sharp current form make him a major contender for derby glory.
Surfinoverthemoon is sired by Corona Surfer and out of the Apollo (TB) mare Dashmetothemoon. The Wyoming-bred gelding was bred by Larson Walter and will once again be saddled by trainer Jess R. Matt. He draws post position eight, the far outside, with jockey Jacob Cardenas aboard.
On the earlier card, the fifth race is scheduled to load at approximately 2:40 PM for the 250-yard $10,000 Bucking Horse Sale Futurity Consolation. The race features the second-fastest eight qualifiers from the May 2nd trial heats, as another talented group of juveniles takes center stage.
Mg Private Call enters as the 7-2 morning-line favorite after a solid effort in her career debut. The filly finished fourth behind the fastest qualifier, Uncle D Weight, gaining valuable experience in her first start and showing encouraging potential heading into the consolation final.
The Indiana-bred filly races for M and G Farms and is sired by Constituent, out of the Favorite Cartel mare Clever Conversation. Trainer Jess R. Matt will saddle the filly from post seven, with jockey Julian Zavala named to ride.
With a strong lineup of proven qualifiers returning for both the Dan Lockie Derby and the Bucking Horse Sale Futurity Consolation, Saturday afternoon at Miles City promises thrilling finishes, rising stars, and an exciting showcase of Quarter Horse racing. Fans and bettors alike can expect a fast-paced afternoon of competitive matchups and dramatic blanket finishes from start to finish.
