OPELOUSAS, LA–NOVEMBER 23, 2025The Saturday card at Evangeline Downs features an eight-race program topped by two trial heats for the LQHBA Breeders Derby, where thirteen Louisiana-bred sophomores will sprint 350 yards in hopes of securing a spot in the December 20 finals for the $50,000 added purse.

Making his long-awaited return is San Lorenzo Chrome, who begins his Derby campaign nearly a year after completing a flawless two-year-old season. The colt went four-for-four in 2024, highlighted by a dominant victory in the G1 $1 Million LQHBA Louisiana Million Futurity. With $475,139 already earned, the $30,000 LQHBA Yearling Sale purchase returns for owner Rogelio Marquez, Jr.

Sired by Freighttrain B and out of Jet Black Presence by Jet Black Patriot, San Lorenzo Chrome was bred in Louisiana by Charles Boudreaux. Trainer Juan C. Garcia sends him out from post four in the fifth race as the 8-5 second choice, with regular rider Arturo Alvarez back aboard.

Standing in his way is Gold Gun Z, the 1-1 morning line favorite in the same trial. The gelding has compiled an impressive sophomore résumé, finishing second in the $110,000 Mardi Gras Derby, capturing the G3 $154,000 Delta Downs Louisiana Bred Derby, and running fifth in the $50,000 Treme Derby Stakes. With $317,654 in earnings, the $122,000 LQHBA Yearling Sale graduate races for Party Tyme Racing.

Sired by Gold Heart Eagle V and out of Cf Smokin Gun by Tres Seis, he was bred in Louisiana by Slash Z Quarter Horses. Jose R. Espinosa trains the accomplished gelding, who breaks from the outside post six under his regular pilot, Noe Castaneda.

The thirteen talented Louisiana-bred sophomores entered in Saturday’s trials bring multiple graded stakes credentials to the starting gate, all seeking one of the ten coveted berths in the LQHBA Breeders Derby Finals. With proven performers and rising stars alike, the stage is set for a pair of competitive and compelling trial heats at Evangeline Downs.
