HOUSTON, TX–May 4, 2026—Saturday, May 9th at Sam Houston Race Park sets the stage for one of the most electrifying programs of the season, as a ten-race card kicks off at 6:30 PM featuring seven stakes’ events packed with talent, speed, and championship implications. The night is anchored by a powerful lineup that includes the G3 Q-Racing Video Distance Challenge, the Adequan Derby Final, the G3 John Deere Juvenile Final, the G1 Texas Breeders Futurity, and the G2 Sam Houston Classic, alongside the John Buchanan Memorial and Leon Bard Memorial Stakes. It’s a card built for intensity from start to finish, where every race raises the stakes.
The action begins with the G3 $43,478 Q-Racing Video Distance Challenge Final, where eight seasoned runners return from the April 24th trials to tackle the demanding 870-yard “hook” distance.
Breaking from post seven, fastest qualifier Gjr Rooster brings both grit and consistency into the spotlight. The five-year-old gelding proved his toughness in the trials, holding firm through a two-wide duel around the turn to secure a half-length victory and the top time. With a record of 5-7-4 from 21 starts and earnings of $168,379, he has established himself as a reliable force in distance racing.
Owned by Richard D. Young, Joe David Yates, and Zack Stinebaugh, the Texas-bred son of This Is an Eagle out of the Thoroughbred mare Granny Grump will once again have Stinebaugh calling the shots as trainer while Gilberto Linares takes the reins, aiming to deliver another powerful performance when it matters most.
The seventh race shifts the focus to the 400-yard $58,344 Adequan Derby Final, featuring ten of the fastest three-year-olds from the April 24th trials.
The Valiant Flame enters as one of the most dangerous contenders after a game effort in the trials, finishing just a neck behind the fastest qualifier, Full Throttle N 25, in a hard-fought duel. The Texas-bred filly has shown consistency throughout her young career, compiling two wins and two seconds from six starts while earning $35,436.
Owned by Torres Buildings, she carries a strong pedigree as a daughter of The Louisiana Cartel out of Valiant Hero mare Valiant Flame. Drawing the rail in post one, she’ll rely on a clean break and a strong finish under regular rider Jose R. Herbert for trainer Brian Stroud to turn the tables in the final.
Momentum continues to build into the eighth race, the G3 $106,029 John Deere Juvenile Final, where the next generation of stars takes center stage.
Jeg Fascination B headlines the field as the fastest qualifier after an authoritative three-quarter length victory in the final trial heat. The filly brings both speed and experience into the final, boasting two wins from three starts and earnings of $11,400, making her one of the most seasoned runners in the lineup.
Bred in Texas by Jesus Eden Garza, she is by Freighttrain B and out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Ja Fascination. Trainer Jose U. Lopez will send her from post three with Noe Castaneda aboard, looking to capitalize on her sharp form and proven ability under pressure.
Saturday night’s stakes-loaded program is more than just a showcase; it’s a gateway to the bigger stage. The AQHA Challenge Finals at Sam Houston mark the opening leg toward the prestigious Championship Finals Day at Albuquerque Downs on October 17th, giving every contender added incentive to deliver their best performance. With elite runners, deep fields, and championship implications across the board, fans and bettors alike can expect a thrilling night where every stride counts, and every finish could define a season.
The races at Sam Houston can be watched on Q-Racing Video.
