HOUSTON, TX–MAY 9, 2026—Sam Houston Race Park honored former Texas Quarter Horse Association Executive Director Rob Werstler during Saturday night’s live racing program, recognizing his decades of service and contributions to the Texas horse racing industry following his retirement in March.

Werstler concluded a career spanning more than four decades in racing, including nearly 30 years with TQHA. He joined the association as Director of Racing in 1998 before being elevated to Executive Director in 2021, helping guide Texas Quarter Horse racing through significant periods of industry growth, operational change, and legislative challenges.

During the winner’s circle presentation, Werstler was recognized by horsemen, racing officials, and industry leaders for his leadership, professionalism, and longstanding commitment to Texas racing. Current TQHA Executive Director Scott Sherwood joined Werstler in the presentation as the organization continues its leadership transition following Werstler’s retirement.

Sherwood, a longtime racing executive with experience in racing office management, simulcasting, and track operations, joined TQHA in 2021. He succeeded Werstler as Executive Director while continuing in his role as Director of Racing, providing continuity for the organization as Texas Quarter Horse racing moves forward under new leadership.
