Jockey Dispute Halts Weekend Racing at Hipódromo de las Américas

MEXICO CITY, MEX–MARCH 9, 2026–Racing at Hipódromo de las Américas was cancelled over the weekend after the Association of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse Jockeys declined to ride due to ongoing disagreements regarding operations and scheduling for the current racing season.

Track operator Administradora Mexicana de Hipódromo (AMH) announced Saturday that jockeys would not participate in the March 7 card or the Sunday, March 8 program, forcing the track to suspend both days of racing. Admission fees were refunded to patrons in attendance.

AMH officials said discussions between the company and jockey representatives are ongoing, and a meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, to address the points of contention and work toward resuming the 2026 racing program next weekend.

The track also noted it has supported jockeys during the past two seasons in cases involving injured riders and lost mounts in accordance with agreements made with the association, while expressing disappointment over what it described as a lack of reciprocity during a critical time for Mexico’s racing industry.
