NORMAN, OK–AUGUST 27, 205–Leon Hendrix, breeder of AQHA Racing Champion Dark Nme, of Norman, passed away on August 23, 2025. He was 79.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. (CDT) Friday, August 29, 2025, at Goldsby Church. A brief graveside service for the family will follow at Washington Cemetery.
Hendrix was born on March 12, 1946, at his home in Washington, Oklahoma, the 5th of 10 children born to Daniel Birk Hendrix and Flora (Nelson) Hendrix.
Leon was raised in Washington, where he attended school and graduated with the Warrior Class of 1964. Shortly after graduating high school, he made the decision to join the Oklahoma Army National Guard. Leon served four years, both faithfully and honorably.
After his time in the National Guard, Leon moved to Texas to work with his brother, Birk. It was during this time, working alongside his brother, that he learned the knowledge and skills of the plumbing trade.
In 1968, Leon met his first wife, Veda Lee Headrick. Together they raised their two wonderful sons, Brent and Chad. They built a lifelong friendship and remained close throughout the years.
After learning the plumbing trade, Leon went on to work for Southside Plumbing. Leon was driven and dedicated to working hard every single day. His passion and work ethic propelled him to start his own company, H&H Plumbing, in 1976, where he has been employing family and friends ever since.
In his free time, Leon enjoyed golfing and playing gin. He was also an avid OU football fan, and even named a few of his dogs in honor of his love for the Sooners!
Later in life, to everyone’s surprise, he started successfully breeding and racing quarter horses.
He bred Dark NME, Hes Relentless out of Quions, by Spit Curl Jess, the 2023 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly who earned more than $1.7 million from 14 starts with nine wins. Her dam, Quions, was named Champion Oklahoma Broodmare in 2023. Hendrix’s L Hendrix Horses, LLC, ranked among the year's leading breeders.
Leon was extremely hardworking, dependable, generous, and even a little stubborn at times. But, more than anything, he was a family man. He loved spending quality time with family and hosting family get-togethers. He truly cherished every moment with them! Leon was a one-of-a-kind man who will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Flora Hendrix, and siblings Darrell Hendrix, Ella Hanner, Orville Hendrix, and Lloyd Hendrix.
Leon is survived by: his sons, Brent Hendrix and wife Natalie of Yukon, and Chad Hendrix of Norman; his first wife, Veda Hendrix; grandchildren, Jordan Bush and wife Samantha of Princeton, Texas, Tyler Bush of Oklahoma City, and Presley Hendrix of Yukon; two great-grandchildren, Ellie and Lucy Bush; siblings, Birk Hendrix of Bowie, Texas, Jerry Hendrix and wife Kathy of Goldsby, Carl Hendrix and wife Vanessa of Norman, Carolyn Hendrix of Goldsby, and Julie Kelly of Moore; second wife, Cindy Brewer and family, two of his best friends Baker and Champ, as well as a host of other family and friends.
Family and friends are welcome to come by, view photos, and sign the book to pay their respects from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Wilson Little Funeral Home in Purcell, www.wilsonlittle.com.
