MILES CITY, MT—MAY 3, 2025—YO Special Effort, a 2-year-old daughter of multiple stakes sire Fiftyshadezofgrey, broke her maiden at first asking Saturday when she set the fastest qualifying time for the BHS Quarter Horse Futurity at Miles City.
The eight fastest qualifiers, from eight trial races contested, will return Saturday, May 17, to vie for the winner's share of a $60,000-est. purse going a distance of 250 yards.
Y O Special Effort rallied under jockey Jacob Cardenas to defeat fellow qualifier Kit KKarsyn by a neck win race 4. She completed the task in 13.826 seconds, equaling an 80 speed index, the fastest of the day.
Trainer Jess Matt saddled the Wyoming homebred for owner-breeder Gerald Kaul. The 2-year-old filly is out of Barley A Secret by Brindis Por Cayenne.
Matt won three trials and qualified four horses to the BHS Futurity final.
Trainer Robert Don Johnson saddled other finalists, including the second fastest qualifier, Heartland Xpress, who won by a neck under jockey Ruven Chavez in the sixth trial (race 7). The daughter of world champion sire Freighttrain B clocked 13.806, an 81 speed index for owner Barbara Barley.
Brant Barley bred Heartland Xpress in Missouri from the Hawkinson mare Bye Bye Birdy. The bay filly was making her second start after finishing fourth for a $25,000 tag at Remington Park last month. She has earned $2,390.
