Why So Political drew clear late to win the $59,400 Northlands Futurity at Canterbury Park on Thursday evening, giving trainer Jason Olmstead a sweep of the top three placings.
Ridden by Gonzalo Valles Jr., Why So Political broke inwardly from post six before moving into contention. The filly took over late and drew clear by one length, completing the 350 yards in :17.823 for a 94 speed index.
Why So Political is a homebred for Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC and was a $42,000 repurchase at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale. She is sired by world champion Apollitical Jess and out of the stakes-winning First Down Dash mare Why.
Her female family includes Dam of Distinction and Broodmare of the Year Runaway Wave ($79,183), world champion Wave Carver ($1,005,946), three-time champion Ocean Runaway ($1,642,498) and two-time champion Uncle D ($689,165).
Why So Political has now won three consecutive starts and improved her record to 7-3-0-1 with earnings of $41,139. Earlier this season, she was a finalist in the Prairie Meadows Gold Juvenile Stakes.
Sheza A Sugar Momma rallied to finish second under jockey Ryder Olmstead. The filly remained within striking distance before making her late run to secure the runner-up spot, finishing one length behind the winner in :17.987 for a 90 speed index.
Owned by Tom Maher and Paul Luedemann and trained by Jason Olmstead, Sheza A Sugar Momma was bred by Summer Run Inc. She is sired by Hes Relentless and out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Candy Coated Paint.
Sheza A Sugar Momma has put together an impressive start to her career, highlighted by victories in the North Star State Futurity and MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity. She now has a record of 5-2-2-1 with earnings of $52,318.
Ourrelentlessdynasty crossed the wire in third under Armando Alvidrez. The filly dueled along the inside and briefly held the lead before being outfinished, crossing the wire a nose behind Sheza A Sugar Momma in :17.999 for an 89 speed index.
Ourrelentlessdynasty is owned by Tom Maher and Amber Olmstead and trained by Jason Olmstead. Bred by Tom Maher, she is sired by Hes Relentless and out of the Fdd Dynasty mare Ms Dynasty.
She now holds a record of 6-1-1-1 with earnings of $26,802. Earlier this season, Ourrelentlessdynasty finished second in the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity.
Livin D Dream finished fourth, followed by Daylynn, Wisp, Shes So Relentless, Incendiari and Golden Wonton. Runs Like The Wind was scratched.
