Third Consecutive Victory For Action Required In The $105,000 Sires' Cup Derby
SELMA, TX–AUGUST 17, 2024–The second fastest qualifier from the trials, Action Required, returns to the $105,000 Sires' Cup Derby finals at Retama Park on Saturday for the win.
Breaking ninth from the gates, Action Required made a driving finish to the wire, winning by a head over Cowboy Away. Jockey Ricardo Ayala piloted the son of leading third-crop sire of winners Kvn Corona to victory in :20.285 seconds. He clocked an 87 speed index with an eight mph headwind, and the 400-yard slight upset paid $12.40 to win on 5-1 odds.
Runner-up Cowboy Away, ridden by Jose Alvarez, was outfinished for second, crossing the wire a 1/2-length ahead of Ez Money 123 and jockey Oscar Andrade Jr.
Trained by Raul Galvan, Action Required has won the last three starts, but today's $42,000 victory was his first stakes win. The payday boosted his lifetime earnings to $78,080, and his record improved to 4-2-2 from 11 starts.
Breeder Jerry Chapman sold Action Required to his owner, Rancho El Huajillo LLC, for $25,000 in the 2022 TQHA Yearling Sale. The Texas-bred gelding is out of Perriwinkle by Mr Jess Perry.
Cowboy Away is a multiple-winning son of leading second-year sire Flying Cowboy 123 and has $47,843 in earnings. His owner, P & J Racing Ltd, repurchased him for $40,000 in the 2022 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Saucer 5 Ranches LLC bred the sorrel gelding in Oklahoma out of Sfr Fire N Brimstone by Walk Thru Fire.
Third-place finisher Ez Money 123 is also a. son of the leading sire. Flying Cowboy 123. Tammy Johnson trains the three-time winner out of Royal Regime by Coronado Cartel for owner-breeder Marty Anderson. The Oklahoma-bred gelding has $52,653 in the bank.
Cr Dmj Policy, Franki Jr, Trainarunnin, Tempting Celebration, White Collar, Gjr Rooster, and Boks Dream Catcher complete the order of finish.
