Tempting Cowboy Sets Top Mark In Sweetwater Derby Trials Sunday
ROCK SPRINGS, WY–AUGUST 25, 2024–Oklahoma homebred Tempting Cowboy was a gate-two-wire winner in the first of four trials for the Sweet Water Downs Derby to post the fastest qualifying time at Rock Springs today.
The ten fastest qualifiers will return to Sweetwater Downs on Saturday, September 7, to vie for the winner's share of a $35,000-added—purse at a distance of 400 yards.
Tempting Cowboy was a two-length trial winner under jockey Jesus Valenzuela while stopping the clock in 19.875 seconds, a 97-speed index into a 15 mph crosswind.
Trainer Josh Taylor saddled the son of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 to his sixth career win in 15 starts for owner-breeder Bill Doenz.
Doenz bred the sorrel colt from the Tempting Dash mare Sweet Temptation. A finalist in the Wyoming Derby in his last start on August 10, Flying Cowboy has earned $43,688.
Also ridden by Valenzuela, Jaj Baby B Train flew from the gate in the third trial to win by 1-1/2 lengths. His time of 19.900, a 97-speed index into a 15 mph crosswind, was the day's second fastest.
Calli Dominguez saddled the son of world champion sire Freighttrain B to his third win in eight starts for owner-breeders Justin and Amy Davis. Bred in Utah from the Mr Fancy Fame mare Romance By The River, Jaj Baby B Train has earned $10,600.
