Surely Im Corona Breaks Her Maiden With An Upset In The Alberta Stallion Stakes
EDMONTON, AB–AUGUST 17, 2024–Surely Im Corona gets the upset after breaking her maiden in the $43,336 (US) Alberta Stallion Stakes at Century Mile on Saturday.
Marti Alexander qualified Surely Im Corona with the third fastest time in the trials but chose to ride Rjs Boss in the finals, placing second. Daniel Tavares took the mount in the finals aboard Surely Im Corona. The duo rallied late and edged clear for a 1 3/4-length victory in :15.70 seconds, clocking a 90 speed index. The 330-yard effort paid $15.70 to win on 6-1 odds.
Rjs Boss and Flash Me A Corona, piloted by J. Botello, hit the wire together in a photo finish. Flash Me A Corona lost the nod by a neck for third.
Trainer Brant Laczo saddled Surely Im Corona for owner-breeder Shirley Laczo. The $20,001 payday increased her earnings to $22,861 and improved her race record to 1-1-1 from four starts. The daughter of Obsessed With Corona is out of Surely Im First by First Timber.
Rjs Boss broke his maiden earlier in June and has a record of one win and two seconds from four starts with $14,116 in the bank. Buckey Stockwell conditions the son of Jd Wagon Boss for owner Colton Wills. T. Copithorne and G. Wills bred the brown colt out of Rj Bitterroot Babe by El Mistral.
Flash Me A Corona has yet to break his maiden from four starts with $9,593 in earnings. The Craig Smith-trained gelding is sired by Obsessed With Corona and out of Look Back Moonflash by First Moonflash. Breeder Ralph Danard owns the brown gelding in partnership with Janet Partriquin.
O La Dee Da, Moccasin Annie and Shez Cruisin Hot round out the order of finish. Frostbite Mountain, Hold On Boss and O First Comet were scratched.
