Robert Johnson Stables Dominate the VBA Open Futurity Finals With Speedy Famous One On Top
FORT PIERRE, SD–OCTOBER 5, 2024–Trainer Robert Don Johnson trained five of the six finalists in the $11,500 VBA Open Futurity (not black type) at Fort Pierre on Saturday, including the top three. Famous Speedy One came out on top, winning his third career victory after the three-way photo-finish duel.
Jockey Luis Maldonado was aboard Famous Speedy One for his neck victory over Rsecret Valentine. The son of multiple stakes sire Famous Painted One was the post-time favorite and clocked a 92-speed index in 13.526 seconds with the assistance of a 20 mph tailwind. The 250-yard dash paid $5.80 to win.
Uriel Cervantes rode Rsecret Valentine to second place by a neck over Somethinintheorange and jockey Brian Beetem.
The $5,635 payday boosted Famous Speedy One's career total to $29,940 for owner Wilson Racing Stables. The North Dakota-bred gelding has three wins, one second, and one-third from seven starts.
Famous Speedy One broke his maiden in his first start this season, earning him a spot in the BHS Open Futurity, where he placed third in the finals. Later, in July, he won the NDQHRA Northern Plains Futurity.
Bred by Darrel Smith and Norren Cavanaugh, Famous Speedy One is out of the Free Company mare Little Free Speed.
Valerie Shoun owns runner-up Rsecret Valentine, who has two wins from seven starts and nearly $10,000 in the bank. Bob and Deanna Willaims bred the $15,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate in Washington. The daughter of Hez Our Secret is out of Rmiss Jessy by Mr Jess Perry.
Third-place finisher Somethinintheorange was bred in Oklahoma by Jeffrey Calender. The winning daughter of The Marfa Light has one win from six starts with over $5,000 in earnings. Kirk Fasthorse owns the sorrel filly out of Valiant Flier by Valiant Hero.
One Sweet Fighter, Cash Buys A Corona and Prized Panther round out the order of finish.
