Rare Roy Fastest Qualifier For Speedhorse Quarter Horse Derby at Fair Meadows
TULSA, OK–JULY 5, 2024–Rare Roy posted the fastest qualifying time for the $69,489 Speedhorse Quarter Horse Derby on Friday night at Fair Meadows.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Fair Meadows on Saturday, July 20, to vie for the winner's share of a $69,489 purse going 350 yards.
Rare Roy broke out under jockey Rolando Raudales in the second trial finishing a half-length on top at the wire. The Sean Roy gelding clocked :17.733 seconds, equaling a 95-speed index, to record the fastest qualifying mark.
Cosme Quijada trains the 3-year-old Oklahoma homebred for owner-breeder Ismael Quijada. Out of the Especially Rare mare Rare Martha, Rare Roy has won four of 13 career starts and is a stakes-placed earner of more than $56,000.
Kams Relentless, ridden by Edwin Escobedo, led wire-to-wire for a 1 1/4-length victory over Ss Cant Touch This in the first of four trials. The son of Hes Relentless clocked a 95 speed index in :17.741 seconds for the second fastest qualifying time.
Trainer Clint Crawford saddled the three-time winner for owners Conda Maze and Ray Whitmire. The three-time stakes finalist has earned $72,298. Gord and Jackie Pevehouse bred Kams Relentless in Oklahoma out of Pv Queen Bee Candy by Cartels Candy Man.
