Pyc Gloria Leads Qualifiers For Elko Quarter Horse Derby Finals

ELKO, NV—AUGUST 22, 2025—Three 400-yard trials were contested Friday afternoon at the Elko County Fairgrounds to determine the field for the $26,066 Elko Quarter Horse Derby, and Pyc Gloria posted the fastest qualifying time of the day.
In the second trial, the three-year-old filly stopped the clock in 20.001 seconds, a 95 speed index into a 5 mph headwind, holding off Cb Docs Bella Terra by half a length under jockey Julian Zavala.
Owned by Miguel Zavala and trained by Adrian Zavala, Pyc Gloria was bred in Utah by Miguel Zavala Lopez. The talented filly is sired by Pyc Paint Your Wagon and out of the Giorgino mare Giorgina, and she will return as the one to beat in the September 1 finals.
A winner of three of six career starts, Pyc Gloria has earned $26,561.
The second-fastest qualifier of the day was Paint The City, a three-year-old gelding who covered the distance in 20.037 seconds, a 94 speed index to win his trial impressively.
Owned by Efrain Acosta and trained by Ceasar Luna, Paint The City was bred in Utah by Spencer Peterson. The gelding is sired by Jess Paint Me and out of the Five Bar Cartel mare High Five City, was ridden in the finals by Angel Acevedo Armenta.
The ten fastest qualifiers from today's trials will return to compete in the Elko Quarter Horse Derby final on Monday, September 1, 2025, at the Elko County Fairgrounds.
