PCQHRA Breeders Futurity Qualifiers Announced Following Fifth Trial Review

On Sunday, August 23, at Los Alamitos Race Course, a timer malfunction occurred during the fifth trial for the Grade 2, $300,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity at 350 yards. The trial was won by Juan Moya and Saul Acosta’s Test Pilot by a nose over James Markum and Steve Burns’ Indiana Fever. Track management and the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association immediately began a review process for the race, working closely with the track’s television department to analyze all available video data at its disposal.

Under the protocol established by American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Rule RAC301.6.2, a detailed, frame-by-frame digital video review of the fifth trial was conducted. The analysis showed that both Test Pilot and Indiana Fever posted times fast enough to rank among the 10 fastest qualifiers for the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. This information was presented to the California Horse Racing Board stewards at Los Alamitos and was approved unanimously on Thursday morning.

Using the frame-by-frame video review "from the moment the starting gate stall doors are fully open parallel to the racing track" per AQHA Rule RAC301.6.2, Test Pilot’s winning time was set at :17.749. To confirm the integrity of its video review process, Los Alamitos track management and the PCQHRA requested the AQHA Racing Department conduct its own independent video analysis. The AQHA review provided an equivalent result on the winning time.

Existing data from the track’s photo-finish provider was then used to determine Indiana Fever’s final time. The photo-finish data indicated that Indiana Fever finished 12/1000ths of a second behind Test Pilot, giving her a time of :17.761. These times placed Test Pilot as the third-fastest qualifier, while Indiana Fever tied for the sixth-fastest qualifying time overall. The photo-finish data also showed that Ximenarey, the third-place finisher in the race, finished 219/1000ths of a second behind Test Pilot for a time of :17.968.

Following this review, the 10 qualifiers for the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity are as follows: Cv Fdddinasty Shan (:17.680), Nuclear Arsenal (:17.745), Test Pilot (:17.749), Uptick (:17.754), AJ Your Favorite (:17.755), Famous Cowboy To You (:17.761), Indiana Fever (:17.761), Celtic Cowboy (:17.766), Jessonefamouseagle (:17.773), and Rational (:17.774).
