Olmstead Saddles Trifecta Led By Cardiac Cowboy In $111,560 Altoona Derby

ALTOONA, IA—SEPTEMBER 27, 2024—After dominating the September 9 trials to qualify seven of the 10 finalists, trainer Jason Olmstead returned Friday night to saddle the trifecta, led by Cardiac Cowboy, in the $111,560 Altoona Derby final at Prairie Meadows.

A going away 1-1/4 length winner under jockey Ramiro Garcia, Cardiac Cowboy completed the 400 yards in 19.514 seconds, equaling a 102 speed index with a 5 mph tailwind.

Olmstead saddled the son of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 to his eighth career win in 16 starts for owner-breeder Jo Rice. The Oklahoma homebred, from the Carters Cartel mare Southard Cartel, earned $50,202 to increase his bankroll to $301,175.

A graded stakes winner, Cardiac Cowboy won last year's Valley Junction Futurity(G3) at Prairie Meadows.

Runner-up Relentless Bay earned $20,081 for his second-place effort under jockey Armando Alvidrez. Olmstead conditions the Oklahoma homebred for owner-breeder Tom Maher. Out of the FDD Dynasty mare Ms Dynasty, Relentless Bay has earned $67,344 in 15 career starts.

Also, an Oklahoma homebred, Jess A Rednec Cowboy, finished a neck back to earn $11,156. Brenda Reiswig is the owner-breeder of the gelding out of Valiant Red Vixen by Valiant Hero. Olmstead tapped jockey Francisco Ramirez, Jr., to ride the

$136,993 winner of the Grade 3 Easy Jet Stakes.

Fastest qualifier Lipstick Lou was fourth, followed by Mr Kash Wagon, Sheza Famous Candy, Shes Sumoke Stacked, Relentless Fantasy and Jess A Frenchy Girl. Eysa Ivory Girl was scratched.
