Nachor Secret earns first stakes win in Harley Greene Derby Final at Horseshoe Indianapolis
SHELBYVILLE, IN–JUNE 1, 2024–Indiana sire and former racehorse in the Hoosier State Habits Secret just added another stakes winner to his impressive list. Nachor Secret earned his first career stakes win in the 10th running of the $99,200 Harley Greene Derby Final Saturday, June 1 at Horseshoe Indianapolis. The race was part of the first all Quarter Horse Day for Indiana and produced some great racing during the 12-race program.
Nachor Secret turned in the quickest trial to advance into the Harley Greene Derby final, and he came right back with another impressive win. It was only the second time he would match strides with 2023 Quarter Horse of the Year Red Headed Beach, who scored a victory against him last fall in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity final. Both horses won their trials and advanced, looking to be the two horses to beat in the contest.
Ridden by Martin Munoz, Nachor Secret broke from post seven in perfect fashion in the nine-horse lineup, but Red Headed Beach and Rolando Pina grabbed the lead from the gate. The duo moved out with authority to lead the way through the initial stages of the 350-yard dash.
Midway down the stretch, Nachor Secret began accelerating toward Red Headed Beach. Once he caught up with her, she dug back in to give him a challenge, but his momentum was too strong as he cruised under the wire for the win by three-quarters of a length in a time of :17.855. Red Headed Beach was a solid second-place finisher over Tin Knocker and Jorge Garcia for third.
Nachor Secret paid $6.20 for the win. The three-year-old grey gelding was surrounded by supporters of Owner-Trainer Ricardo Martinez as well as friends and family of Harley Greene, who presented the trophy.
Nachor Secret stood like a professional for his photo. It was his fourth career win in eight starts, with only one of those outings off the board. He more than doubled his career earnings and now has more than $92,000 on his credentials.
"I’m very excited for this win," said Martinez, who noted the gelding’s dam, Eyes A Favorite, passed away the day he won his trial. "This means a lot to have both his mom and his dad. Since we gelded him this winter, he has been easy to work with. He eats and sleeps and works when he has to. I was hoping for the same performance he turned in during his trials, and he would run the same as he did today."
Munoz has been aboard for both of his wins in 2024. He also does all the morning work aboard the grey gelding.
"Martin (Munoz) has been on him all season, working with him," added Martinez. "He knows him very well and has done a great job riding him."
Trainer Tim Eggleston conditioned the post-time favorite Red Headed Beach for owner Pattie Marshall. The daughter of Escondido Beach broke her seven consecutive win streak with the second place finish, which included the Roxie Little Futurity, Leader Of The Class Sale Futurity, and Gordon Mobley Futurity in 2023.
The three-year-old filly has a record of 7-1-1 from nine starts and $393,869 in the bank. Sheri Miller in Indiana bred Red Headed Beach out of the Red Storm Cat mare Red Storm Flash.
Jockey Jorge Garcia led Tin Knocker to his third-place finish. The three-year-old gelding has lit the board six of nine starts with $89,683 in the bank. He has yet to win a stakes race but did place second to Red Headed Beach in last year's Leader Of The Class Sale Futurity and was fifth in the Golden Mobley Futurity.
Trainer Ricardo Martinez saddled Tin Knocker for owner Gerardo Corral, who repurchased him for $10,500 in the 2022 QHRAI Select Stallion Auction. Bred by Carlos Ramos, he is out of Favorite Sissy by Favorite Cartel.
Malibu Beach, Ima Jess Dashing, Beach Shaker, Beach Bay, Sin Tachas Secret and Run The Beach complete the order of finish.
The race is named in honor of longtime state farm inspector and advocate for Quarter Horse racing Harley Greene. He was trackside to present the trophy to the connections of Nachor Secret for the win.
Greene was instrumental in bringing pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing to the state of Indiana in 1997 and has worked tirelessly to continue the progress of the sport in the Hoosier State. The race named in his honor has become a staple on the early season stakes schedule and marks the first of 2024 out of 28 scheduled for the year. More than $2 million has been allotted for Quarter Horse stakes in 2024.
The 22nd season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing extends through Thursday, Nov. 14. Racing is held Monday through Thursday at 2:10 p.m. All Quarter Horse dates are set for 10:45 a.m. Saturdays June 29, July 20, Aug. 10, Aug. 31, and Oct. 5.
