Multiple Graded Winner One Sweet Sugar Returns To Win Column In Espanade Stakes
NEW ORLEANS, LA–SEPTEMBER 7, 2024–Multiple graded stakes winner One Sweet Sugar got her first win of the year Saturday when she splashed to a length victory in the $50,000 Espanade Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course.
One Sweet Sugar popped from the gate under jockey Leonardo Rodriguez, showing she was clearly the best while completing the 350 yards in 17.673 seconds, a 90-speed index into a 15 mph headwind on a muddy (sealed) racing surface.
Jeremy Derozin trains the Louisiana homebred daughter of multiple stakes sire One Sweet Jess for owner-breeder Rogelio Marquez, Jr. Bred from the Heza Fast Dash mare Sugarshaker B, One Sweet Sugar won the Lee Berwick Futurity(RG1) and the Lassie Futurity(G2) last season at Delta Downs. The $30,000 winner's purse boosted her bankroll to $620,870
One Dashing Dove rallied for second under jockey Ublado Luna. Barbara Alcantara trains the One Dashing Eagle 4-year-old for owner La Herradura Racing LLC. Phil Guilbeau and Randy Morein bred the multiple stakes-placed gelding from the First To Shine mare First Little Magic. The $10,000 second-place payoff pushes One Dashing Dove's earnings past $131,000.
Multiple graded stakes winner Konnan Cartel finished three-quarters back to earn $5,500 for third. Winner of the Eastex Stakes(G2) earlier this year, Konnan Cartel was trained by Leonel Hernandez and ridden by Eleazar Hernandez. Luis Armando Castellanos bred the $386,910 earner from the Jet Black Patriot mare Jet Black Chiraq.
Doin It Just For Fun, Jess Jumpn Dynasty, and Five Bar Jess Cartel completed the field.
