EDMONTON, ALB–AUGUST 24, 2024–Ms Mini Warrior pulls off the upset over post-time favorite and fastest qualifier from the trials Get It Good in the $24,486 (US) Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby at Century Mile on Saturday.

Jockey Corrine Andros rode Ms Mini Warrior to her second-place qualifying finish in the trials but took Timbers Beauty to the finals, placing third. Get It Good, ridden by O. Hernandez, defeated Timbers Beauty by three 1/2-lengths for second place.

Adrian Gonzalez got the leg up aboard Ms Mini Warrior in the 330-yard finals and clocked a 101 speed index in :16.858 seconds against a 30 mph crosswind. Breaking third from the gates, she led the field from the first call and crossed the wire 1 1/2-lengths ahead of Get It Good. The winning effort paid $15.90 to win on 6-1 odds.

There was a slight delay at the start of the race due to fractious horses in the gates. Trainer Brant Lazco said, "Well, sometimes waiting around is a concern, but she hasn’t made too many mistakes, and she came out good."

Ms Mini Warrior broke her maiden this year in the Maiden Express trials from her first start of the season, returning to the finals for second. She went on to qualify for the All Canadian Derby and placed fifth in the finals. Today’s victory marks her second career win from ten starts, and the $11,301 purse increases her earnings to $30,428.

"She broke good in her trial. She’s been proving herself all along, and I had confidence in her," said Lazco.

Although Ms Mini Warrior didn’t win last year, she still had a promising freshman campaign placing second in the Sale Stakes Futurity and was a finalist in the Alberta Bred Futurity [G3].

Trainer Brant Laczo owns Ms Mini Warrior with his wife, Dakota. They repurchased the daughter of Goldin Warrior in the AQHRA Yearling Mixed Sale for $12,500. Isaak Fehr bred her out of the Hez Choice Property mare Sparkling Hy.

Runner-up Get It Good has lit the board 12 of 15 starts with three career wins and $45,393 in the bank. Breeders Barry and Janice Sather sold him for $8,000 to his owner, WT Ranch, Ltd, in the 2022 AQHRA Yearling Mixed Sale. The son of Jd Wagon Boss is out of Status Symbal by Favorite Cartel.

Third-place finisher Timbers Beauty has two career wins with $16,030 in earnings for owner Jeffrey Rath. Wesley Oulton trains and bred the daughter of First Timber out of Burners Beauty by El Rey Burner.

High Rocky Mountain, Hez Hott Ur Nott, Zivas Elvis, and O Lets Be First complete the order of finish. Dj Bright Ruby and Rocn N Space were scratched.
